Strawberry Boy Wins 2015 The Wayne Wilson Mile

Sydney and the season’s leading trainer Chris Waller continued his nice assault on the Brisbane features this winter running the quinella in The Wayne Wilson Mile 2015 on Stradbroke Handicap Day with Strawberry Boy beating home stablemate Flamingo Star in the feature.

The third on the Doomben race card, this year’s $100,000 Listed Ambassador Travel The Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) featured 10 starters including two from the Waller stables.

Race favourite following a last start win at the same track and distance in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) from a fortnight ago was Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Strawberry Boy.

The in-form gelding jumped as the firming $2.20 punters’ pick and while he didn’t have the same big margin to spare as last time out, he did well to hang on and win back-to-back black-types in Brisbane.

Eventual runner-up, German import Flamingo Star near the inside in barrier one with Hugh Bowman aboard was first out of the gates in The Wayne Wilson.

Strawberry Boy and his hoop Zac Purton though came across quickly to run to the front where the horse stayed for the all-the-way win.

Settled into third behind the successful race favourite was the Matthew Dunn-trained Any Day Will Do who was wanting to over race on the outside of the leader.

Jockey Paul Hammersley-then had the Leon Davies-trained Kurtley settled into third just ahead of Grayson Square while the local Tony Gollan-trained Hvasstan raced at the back of the field after jumping from the outside alley.

Up front and doing it easily allowed to roll along, Strawberry Boy got a gun run throughout with Any Day Will Do trying to go closer.

As they came into the straight five-year-old Areion stallion Flamingo Star, having just his second run down under on the back of a disappointing eighth when beaten nearly five lengths by stablemate Boban in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 23, moved up into second.

Those positions held over the closing 300m with Strawberry Boy drawing away to lead by up to three lengths at one stage before tiring, which allowed the other Waller runner in the race to close the winning margin.

On the line the market mover Strawberry Boy ($2.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au) had about half a length to spare over the improving Flamingo Star ($5), a multiple Group 3 winner in Europe, for an all-Waller quinella.

In third was then $17 outsider Epic, the Stratum seven-year-old ridden by apprentice Luke Tarrant, for the local Brisbane-based Kelly Schweida on the back of a fourth to Strawberry Boy in the Lord Mayor’s Cup.

Last year’s winner, when the race ran as the Strawberry Road Handicap, was the John Thompson-trained Transporter who went on to contest two mile races in Brisbane without success.

On June 20 at the Gold Coast as part of the Tattersall’s Tiara Day program is a suitable next assignment for the best out of this year’s The Wayne Wilson Mile, the $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Racing Club Open Mile (1600m).

There’s also the more lucrative $150,000 Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1800m) over 200m further for horses suited to a step up in distance later during the carnival.
