2015 Lancaster Stakes Winner Flippant Too Good

Red hot favourite in the second on Stradbroke Handicap Day, Flippant proved too good for her rivals drawing away over the closing stages in the Lancaster Stakes 2015 to salute for the punters.

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Hinchinbrook filly from Sydney was coming off an easy two and a quarter length victory in the Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Scone from May 16 and jumped at a deservingly short price of $1.65 to go back-to-back through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman from barrier five in the $100,000 Listed James Boag’s Premium Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse for her maiden Queensland run, Flippant was first out of the barriers.

She eventually dropped just off the pacesetter Harlem River, the Gai Waterhouse-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock charging early to go up and lead trying to go all-the-way on the back of a second on debut behind Flippant in the Woodlands last month.

Harlem River and jockey Tommy Berry led them round with the Les Ross-trained Frequendly, second-up after a fourth to Real Good in the Listed BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago, in second.

Flippant was happy to settle into third 700m out on the inside while Positive Charge was racing fourth but out deep in a luckless run.

Frequendly moved up to lead them into the straight just ahead of Harlem River while Flippant was coming for them trying to get out from behind the leaders.

She got into the clear with 300m to go and she and Harlem River paired off at the 100m and drew well clear of the rest of the field to battle it out.

It was Flippant ($1.65F) on the outside after the gun run throughout the race that proved too good for the brave Harlem River ($5.50) in the closing stages however, the progressive filly drawing away to win.

Three lengths off the dominant quinella adding value to the top three was the Andrew Williamson-trained, Craig Williams-ridden roughie from the Sunshine Coast Opinionated ($41) who came off a second at home over 1200m from last Friday.

Last year’s Lancaster Stakes champ was the Trevor Bailey-trained Tales Of Fashion who backed up for a failed eighth to Sports Edition in the Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m).

This year a possible next-up assignment for Flippant could be a step up in distance to take on the boys at set weights on the Gold Coast in the $100,000 Listed Australia Post Stakes (1400m) as part of the Tattersall’s Tiara Day action on June 20.
