Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The best three-year-old staying types of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival come to blows at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day action in the 2015 Queensland Derby, betting tips for which are detailed below.
This year’s $600,000 Group 1 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2200m) runs as Race 7 at 2:57pm (AEST) and features a full field of 16 including the first two of the emergencies after Master Of Arts and Inauguration both came out with injuries.
Queensland Derby betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by Werther, the Andrew Campbell-trained New Zealander in flying form and drawn the rails with jockey Jim Byrne riding.
Winner of the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) over the older horses last Saturday, the Tavistock gelding is back against his own kind at the same track and distance and has firmed in from $2.70 to $2.30 to take it out.
You can get him at $4.60 right now though at Ladbrokes.com.au thanks to their Best Tote or SP + 20% on your winnings promo being offered on the three Group 1s at Doomben on Saturday!
What else is at single-figures for the win?
There are just two others the bookies are choosing to keep that safe under $10 with the Peter Moody-trained Grand Prix Stakes winner Upham ($8) and the Chris Waller-trained Sadler’s Lake ($8) the next best in betting.
So do the bookmakers have it right or is there an upset Queensland Derby result on the agenda?
#2 Upham ($8)
The form around Moody’s Mastercraftsman gelding is top class and he has run first or second in his four lead-up runs. Two back was runner-up in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) in his first look at the tight Doomben track and then he improved to win by 1.3 lengths in the Grand Prix Stakes, which history shows is the right race to come into the Derby via. He did it from age 11 of 16 with Kerrin McEvoy riding last start and for the Group 1 he has a similar barrier (12 into 10) and McEvoy retains the ride. Super consistent and will be handy.
#7 High Midnight ($21)
For the value punt in the Queensland Derby quinella we like this in-form Bart & James Cummings-trained Melbourne visitor who comes off back-to-back wins. Tim Clark has the ride from a nice barrier 7 (into 5) draw, the High Chaparral gelding last seen saluting over 2000m at Randwick in the mud. Rain would definitely help but going out on the limb and saying can handle a class rise on firmer going this weekend from that gate and surprise a few.
#1 Werther ($2.30)
Top fancy, ticks plenty of boxes but is just a little short for a seven day turnaround. Yet to do anything wrong and was impressive beating an older field of genuine Group winners in the Eagle Farm Cup over the same track and distance last weekend in WFA race. Won’t be far off the speed from the inside draw and he’s really in top form for the win.
