This weekend the fillies and mares heading towards the Tattersall’s Tiara at the Gold Coast later in the month will face off in the Dane Ripper Stakes 2015 at Doomben Racecourse, betting tips for the set weights plus penalties feature found right here.
There are 11 hopefuls left to face off in Race 4 at 1:07pm (AEST) on Stradbroke Handicap Day on Saturday in the $200,000 Group 2 Best Security Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) with the early scratching of Lumosty.
Robert Smerdon’s impressive three-year-old filly instead gains a start in the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m), where she’ll jump the favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au to win, after the early scratching of Lord Of The Sky in Queensland’s richest race.
With Lumosty out of the Dane Ripper the red hot favourite is the Chris Waller-trained grey Catkins who is also the market mover firming in from $3.30 to $2.20 for the win.
A five-time Group 1 placegetter from seven elite level runs, the ultra-consistent daughter of Dubawi was last seen crossing second in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the Randwick on April 11.
She’s had two trials since and on Saturday will have Hugh Bowman aboard from barrier nine in her first run at the track.
Her record over the distance is very good (9-3-4-1) and she’s heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 20 where she ran fourth last year when it was held at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
Three of Catkins’s rivals are also under $10 in the latest Dane Ripper Stakes odds with the rails-drawn Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid ($6), her stablemate Peron ($8.50) to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from gate six and Peter & Paul Snowden’s Rose Of Choice ($8.50) who is second-up on Saturday with top local hoop Damian Browne in the saddle.
So should you follow the order of the odds when placing your Dane Ripper Stakes bets or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of Hazard ($11) who is after her third on the trot or Smerdon’s remaining hopeful Politeness ($13)?
#1 Catkins ($2.20)
Plenty of boxes ticked by Waller’s perennial Group 1 placegetter who is overdue for an elite level win, connections hoping that comes in the Tiara after she picks up this Group 2 trophy on the way. Is again in red hot form and she’s incapable of running a bad race. She boasts six wins over 1200m and her 1350m form is also imposing (9-3-4-1). Yet to race at Doomben but is fresh with a flying record first-up (8-6-1-0) making her very hard to bet against.
#5 Hazard ($11)
Good value on offer for this Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Flying Spur mare who comes off wins at Caulfield (1100m) and Morphettville (1200m), the latest a Group 3 over Miss Promiscuity on May 16. Has had a three week break and has a good record over Saturday’s distance (8-3-1-0). Is another one seeing the tight Doomben circuit for the first time but her form is hard to knock and jockey James McDonald will do a good job even from the wide barrier (10 into 9).
#4 Bring Me The Maid ($6)
Moody’s Sebring filly gets the run of the race from the inside alley and is out to atone for her Doomben 10,000 ninth over this track and distance from a fortnight ago. She had a luckless run in the Group 1 against an open-age and gender field. That was a much tougher race and she should find this easier to be competitive in. Was good two back when fourth in the BTC Cup and while this distance isn’t her preferred she has class and can finish off well.
