Werther Leads 2015 Queensland Derby Field & Barriers

Andrew Campbell’s impressive Kiwi visitor Werther will shoot for back-to-back wins during his Brisbane raid when he lines-up from the inside alley in Saturday’s Queensland Derby 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.

A winner of four of his 12 starts to date, the Opaki-based Tavistock gelding travelled to Australia last month on the back of some nice lead-up form including a Group 2 win over 2100m back home this autumn.

In his first Aussie run Werther was second past the post behind star WA filly Delicacy in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 9 before he won the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) in devastatingly style over the older horses at Doomben last Saturday.

Now on the short seven day back-up the youngster is back against his own age in the $600,000 Group 1 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2200m).

One of three elite levels on the Stradbroke Handicap Day card, this year’s Queensland Derby field features a capacity 16 starters plus three emergencies with Werther wearing the number one saddlecloth from barrier one with Jim Byrne in the saddle.

Last start winners have saluted in the Queensland Derby twice in the past three years with both Hawkspur (2013) and Brambles (2012) completing the Grand Prix Stakes – Derby double.

This year’s Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2020m) winner at the track shoots for that double again in 2015 with the Peter Moody-trained Upham drawn in barrier 12 (into 10 with the emergencies out) for Saturday.

A former Queensland himself, Moody won his first QLD Derby in 2008 with Riva San and again in 2012 with the aforementioned Brambles with the super consistent Mastercraftsman gelding Upham next in line for the stable.

In the Grand Prix Stakes Upham defeated the Chris Waller-trained Redoutable Heart (2nd) and Darren Weir’s Master Of Arts (3rd) and both are also accepted for the rematch in the Derby on Stradbroke Day.

James McDonald is booked to ride Waller’s well-tried Redoute’s Choice colt Redoutable Heart who is drawn well in barrier two and looking for just his second win at career start number 14.

Master Of Arts meanwhile has gate 13 and Glen Boss in the saddle, the grey colt looking to return to the winning form that saw him salute over 2000m at Caulfield two back before the Grand Prix Stakes third.

Also coming off a win are the likes of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Magicool with work to do from barrier 17 (into 14) and High Midnight from the Melbourne stables of Bart & James Cummings.

James Winks rides Fastnet Rock gelding Magicool who ran fourth in the SA Derby on May 9 before his Flemington win over 2000m a fortnight ago.

High Midnight shoots for three on the trot after back-to-back Sydney wins on Soft – Heavy tracks, form he’s looking to bring to Brisbane where he’ll be on firmer ground.

Other notable Queensland Derby hopes include Waller’s Group 3 Rough Habit Plate winner Sadler’s Lake coming off a Grand Prix fifth and the John Zielke-trained Worthy Cause who saluted in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast in April.
