The headline race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival runs at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday with a capacity field set to face off in the Stradbroke Handicap 2015.
The official final acceptances closed for Queensland’s richest race on Wednesday morning with 16 confirmed starters plus five emergencies for this year’s $2 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1350m).
Due to jump as Doomben Race 8 at 3:37pm (AEST), the Stradbroke Handicap favourite in the pre-field odds at Ladbrokes.com.au has been the Robert Smerdon-trained filly Lumosty.
Weighted only 50.5kg the three-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock has won her past two at Flemington including the Listed The Straight Six (1200m) on May 23 by nearly three lengths with 54kg on her back.
She is sweating on a start in the Stradbroke Handicap field however needing an early scratching from the line-up to gain a run, with Plan B being a run in $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m), which features a final field of 12 fillies and mares currently.
Jockey Corey Brown is on standby for the Stradbroke Handicap ride aboard Lumosty who drew barrier 13.
Heading the Stradbroke Handicap weights and drawn well in barrier eight for jockey Glyn Schofield meanwhile is Chris Waller’s last start Doomben 10,000 winner Boban (58kg).
A four-time Group 1 winner, the Bernardini five-year-old won the 10,000 first-up a fortnight ago from barrier seven (of 16) and so is ideally positioned when he returns to the same track and distance chasing another elite level title this winter in the Sunshine State.
Waller celebrated his 13th Group 1 win of the season last weekend with Winx winning the Queensland Oaks in emphatic style and along with Boban the master Sydney horseman has two other final Stradbroke Handicap acceptors.
Also guaranteed a run with Boban, who looks to complete the Doomben 10,000 – Stradbroke Handicap double for the first time since Campaign King (1988), is the fellow Waller-trained Delectation in barrier 11 for Glen Boss.
Boss shoots for a second Stradbroke win after his success with the John O’Shea-trained Private Steer (2003) and is on a livewire chance with another three-year-old this weekend.
Shamardal gelding Delectation won the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Stakes (1200m) in the wet at Randwick two back beating home Bring Me The Maid and then had his first run in Brisbane two weeks ago when third in the Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m).
Waller’s other hope is German import Flamingo Star (barrier 20) who is the third emergency and who only debuted in Australia last start when eighth in the Doomben 10,000 behind now stablemate Boban.
Wide barriers have thrown up the past two Stradbroke Handicap winners at the roomier Eagle Farm course with River Lad (2014) and Linton (2013) getting the job done from gates 15 and 16 respectively.
This year the tighter Doomben circuit could be a danger for the widely-drawn in a race with seemingly little speed.
Some of the headline hopefuls with double digit barriers to overcome on Saturday in the day’s marquee race include last year’s devastatingly close runner-up Temple Of Boom (14), Peter & Paul Snowden’s upset BTC Cup winner Hot Snitzel (16), one-time second favourite Black Heart Bart (17) from WA coming off a luckless fourth in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide and the O’Shea-trained Generalife (21).
Hugh Bowman will ride Godolphin’s Doomben 10,000 third placed Lonhro five-year-old Generalife from the outside alley on Saturday, the gelding joined in the field by stablemate Knoydart who drew better with barrier four for James McDonald to ride.
The big winner with the inside alley meanwhile is last year’s third placed Srikandi who has barrier one and Kerrin McEvoy riding.
Ciaron Maher’s now four-year-old daughter of Dubawi was in flying form first-up winning the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast before two below par runs when eighth in the BTC Cup and sixth in the Doomben 10,000.
The inside alley will help her chances of atoning this weekend however as Srikandi is set to take the box seat behind likely leader Lord Of The Sky (3).
