Moriarty Leads 2015 Brisbane Cup Field

Chris Waller’s 56-start veteran Moriarty leads the confirmed final field for the last at Doomben Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day this Saturday in Brisbane carrying the top weight in the Brisbane Cup 2015.

A bumper nine-race program runs on the weekend for the biggest day of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and is set to come to a close at 4:17pm (AEST) with the $300,000 Group 2 Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m) featuring 13 stayers.

Waller, a winner of 13 Group 1 races this season after Winx saluted in the Queensland Oaks last Saturday, saddles-up the first two in the field with Moriarty and Index Linked drawn in barriers three and two respectively.

Fourth in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9 behind Pornichet, Clodovil seven-year-old Moriarty ran last Saturday defending his title in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) when runner-to Saturday’s Queensland Derby hope Werther.

He is on the short turnaround then but Blake Shinn retains the ride on the 59kg top weight.

Waller opted to scratch stablemate Index Linked from the Eagle Farm Cup field and the fellow seven-year-old runs in the Brisbane Cup having last been seen winning the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on May 16.

He gets in on 56.5kg this weekend and his Caloundra Cup winning hoop Damian Browne retains the ride.

The only other horse in the Brisbane Cup field weighted above this year’s 53kg minimum is then the Michael Kent-trained mare Epingle (55kg) who gets the inside alley (barrier one) with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

A seven-year-old daughter of Pins, Epingle beat home Index Linked on April 25 at the Gold Coast when she won the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) before a ninth in the Doomben Cup.

She ran better when third in the Eagle Farm Cup last Saturday carrying 57kg and will appreciate the drop back two kilos this weekend.

The only last start winner in this year’s Brisbane Cup line-up meanwhile is the Nigel Blackiston-trained Let’s Make Adeal drawn in gate five with Craig Williams aboard.

Third-up this campaign, the Red Ransom mare was runner-up in Adelaide’s Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) on May 2 and then won at the Morphettville track two weeks later in black type company with Williams in the saddle over 2000m.

Also in top form and drawn well are the likes of the Joe Cleary-trained Landlocked (4) and Joe Pride’s Sense Of Occasion (6).

Zabeel eight-year-old Landlocked won four on the trot earlier this campaign before his last start second over 1800m behind Noisy Ocean at the Gold Coast last Saturday.

The old warhorse from Queanbeyan has his first look at Doomben on the weekend and drops from 58kg last time out to 53kg on Saturday.

Sense Of Occasion comes into the race after four nice runs for two seconds and two victories including the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) victory on a Heavy (9) Randwick track two weeks ago.

Other notable Brisbane Cup hopes this winter include Caloundra Cup runner-up Escado and Brian Smith’s last start Group 3 Premier’s Cup third placed Jetset Lad drawn in barriers 12 and 13 respectively.
