Catkins Heads 2015 Dane Ripper Stakes Field

Chris Waller’s Tatterall’s Tiara-bound mare Catkins will have her lead-up into the Gold Coast Group 1 this weekend leading a quality field of fellow fillies and mares in the Dane Ripper Stakes 2015 at Doomben Racecourse this weekend as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day action in Brisbane.

Waller has opted to run his always honest daughter of Dubawi in the $200,000 Group 2 Best Security Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) on the weekend over her eighth Group 1 attempt in Queensland’s richest race, the $2 million Group 1 Stradroke Handicap over the same track and distance.

A five-time Group 1 placegetter without a win at the highest level to date, five-year-old grey Catkins was last seen running second behind Amanpour in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney back on April 11.

She has had two trials at home since then and returns to Brisbane on Saturday drawn in barrier nine of 12 in the Dane Ripper with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Her Grand Final aim this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival is then on June 20 in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), a race she finished fourth to Cosmic Endeavour behind last year when it ran at Eagle Farm.

The Tattersall’s Tiara is on the agenda for the majority of fillies and mares in the Dane Ripper line-up this weekend, Saturday’s race producing four Tiara winners since 2009.

There are three last start winners in this year’s Dane Ripper Stakes field including the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Hazard who shoots for her third on the trot from a wide barrier 10 draw with James McDonald in the saddle.

Two back she won over 1100m at Caulfield defeating Miss Promiscuity before her Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) success in Adelaide on May 16 leading into Saturday’s test.

Also coming off a win are the Kelso Wood-trained local Danzero filly Dansolei drawn well in barrier two for just her fifth career start on the back of a Gold Coast win over 1300m and the Robert Smerdon-trained Lumosty.

The Dane Ripper is the back-up option for Smerdon’s in-form filly Lumosty, easy winner of the Listed The Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington last start, who is also the first emergency and early favourite to win the Stradbroke Handicap at the same meeting.

If she fails to gain a start with no scratchings from the field in the Group 1 then Lumosty will run in the Group 2 from barrier eight with Corey Brown aboard on way to the Tattersall’s Tiara.

Other headliners in the Dane Ripper Stakes field this year include Smerdon’s other acceptor Politeness with the outside alley to overcome, Toby Edmonds’ last start Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic third placed four-year-old Bound For Earth and Peter Moody’s Sebring filly Bring Me The Maid.

As a two-year-old Bring Me The Maid ran third in the Golden Slipper and most recently she held her own in open-age company when fourth in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) before a luckless ninth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) behind Boban last start.
