The season’s leading Group 1 trainer with 13 elite level victories and counting Chris Waller will launch a three-pronged attack on the JJ Atkins 2015 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
There are three Group 1 races on the Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the $600,000 Group 1 BMW J.J. Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds.
Due to run as Doomben Race 6 at 2:17pm (AEST) on the bumper nine-race line-up, the set weights race for juveniles features a dozen final acceptors including Waller’s trio of stablemates.
The field and Waller’s contingent is led by Hugh Bowman’s mount Counterattack drawn a treat in barrier five and shooting for his second career win at stat number seven.
The son of Redoute’s Choice comes off two good fourths at the track firstly behind Blueberry Hill in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes (1200m) and then the Group 2 BRC Sire’s Produce Stakes (1350m) a fortnight ago.
The BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes has produced seven of the past 10 JJ Atkins winners including Sizzling (2012) who was the last to complete the double.
Waller’s two other runners are then the undefeated Press Statement out wide in barrier 10 for Tye Angland and Feast For Eyes who has come up trumps with barrier one and Zac Purton to ride.
Press Statement has won his opening two career starts in Sydney, an unbeaten record the Hinchinbrook colt will be out to maintain in his Brisbane debut this weekend.
Feast For Eyes meanwhile broke his maiden status at start number five on May 27 at Canterbury over 1550m, the More Than Ready colt now after back-to-back victories.
Also coming off a last start victory is early favourite in the JJ Atkins odds at Ladbrokes.com.au Bassett.
Luke Nolen rides the Peter Moody-trained Savabeel gelding from a gun barrier two draw, lightly-raced Victorian visitor Bassett coming off a winning debut over 1100m at Caulfield from May 16.
If following the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes form then the quinella from that traditional JJ Atkins lead-up both also back-up in the Group 1 on the weekend.
The Clarry Conners-trained I Am Invincible filly Look To The Stars won narrowly with Luke Tarrant aboard from barrier three and the same hoop stays on for Saturday from a similar gate four draw.
Second past the post in the Sires was another filly, the Liam Birchley-trained Blueberry Hill who was defeated just a long neck on the back of her Champagne Stakes win.
Larry Cassidy stays aboard the daughter of Myboycharlie who jumps from gate eight in the Group 1 rematch.
Other notable JJ Atkins runners include Toby Edmond’s Real Saga filly Sagaronne who comes off back-to-back wins including one over 1350m at Doomben on May 30, and the Richard Laming-trained Ashlee Marie who is undefeated with previous wins at Seymour and Randwick.
