Shining Knight Scores 2015 Belmont Sprint Win

There was an odds-on favourite in the race but in the finish all the credit in Saturday’s Belmont Sprint 2015 in Perth went to the Grant Williams-trained Shining Knight who scored his first win of the year in the middle-distance sprint showdown.

The withdrawal of triple Group 1 winner and last start Roma Cup champ Luckygray from this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) saw all the money go on the Darren Mcauliffe-trained Fuchsia Bandana, the daughter of Trade Fair jumping at $1.80.

Coming off a Roma Cup third, the four-year-old favourite was far from disgraced second-up on the weekend but she could only manage to run one and a quarter lengths away third behind the Bob and Sandra Peters-owned and bred winning son of Blackfriars.

Fifth in the Roma Cup when beaten just under four lengths, six-year-old Shining Knight ($7.50) was ridden by Peter Hall for the third straight time this preparation with Hall replacing William Pike, out with a dislocated shoulder, in the saddle.

Hall did another fine job for the Peters, who he also scored the Group 1 Australasian Oaks – SA Derby double aboard smart filly Delicacy for, in the Group 3 and guided Shining Knight to a solid half-length win over Vaughn Sigley’s Statue Of Liberty four-year-old Dawn Approach ($4.40).

It was the second time in as many runs Dawn Approach was beaten home by one in a Belmont Park feature after the gelding’s narrow second only a quarter-length off Luckygray, injured and out in the paddock until the spring, in the Roma Cup on May 16.

Shining Knight has now won seven of his 24 career starts for $634,750 in prize money and will step out over more distance next start for a shot in the $150,000 Strickland Stakes (1600m) on Saturday week.

“The way he finished off his race today he looks like he will run the trip,” Bob Peters told The West Australian.

“He has done a great job for us and with those two going strong in front the race was run to suit him.

“I was quite pleased when I saw Fuchsia Bandana and Dawn Approach out in front because most of the races they had been slowing down and stacking them up, which made it hard for horses coming from behind.”
