Index Linked Heads 2015 Brisbane Cup Nominations

After scratching out from the Eagle Farm Cup last Saturday the Chris Waller-trained Caloundra Cup champ Index Linked is nominated for the Brisbane Cup 2015 at Doomben Racecourse this weekend.

On a day featuring three Group 1 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival majors, the $300,000 Group 2 Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m) runs as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day action on Saturday.

The handicap clash is not short on entries either with Racing Queensland receiving 20 nominations on Monday morning including three for Sydney’s master trainer Waller.

Waller’s headline entry is veteran Dansili seven-year-old Index Linked, the gelding having run second to Epingle in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) two back before a narrow victory in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) on May 16.

He was accepted for the Eagle Farm Cup last Saturday but was scratched from the event, a return scheduled for Saturday over the same track and distance.

Waller’s 2014 Eagle Farm Cup winner Moriarty, fourth in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) this year, did run in the race last Saturday but failed to defend his title when beaten two and a quarter-lengths by the young Kiwi raider Werther.

Moriarty is nominated for the Brisbane Cup back-up this Saturday and he and Index Linked are joined in the entries for Waller by Vilanova, the four-year-old Commands gelding looking to improve on some below par recent form.

There are three other last start winners among the Brisbane Cup nominations this winter along with Index Linked including the Nigel Blackiston-trained Red Ransom mare Let’s Make Adeal who won the Listed Centaurea Stakes (2000m) in Adelaide in mid-May and Sense Of Occasion.

Joe Pride prepares Street Sense four-year-old Sense Of Occasion, a winner of five of his 15 starts to date including the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) in the wet at Randwick last start on May 23.

Also coming off nice lead-up runs are the likes of Eagle Farm Cup third placed Pins mare Epingle from the Cranbourne stables of Michael Kent, Caloundra Cup runner-up Escado and Joe Cleary’s Zabeel eight-year-old Landlocked who won three on the trot before a second over 1800m behind Noisy Ocean at the Gold Coast on May 30.

Other notable Brisbane Cup entries this year include Jetset Lad who ran third to Fuast in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2020m) at Doomben last time out and Verglas mare Lucciola last seen running fourth over the two miles at Flemington in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m).
