2015 The Phoenix Winner Sagaronne Goes Back-to-Back

Toby Edmonds’ Gold Coast-based filly Sagaronne enjoyed her first trip up to Brisbane on Queensland Oaks Day getting the bikkies and posting back-to-back victories with a nice late effort to take out The Phoenix 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.

The chestnut daughter of Real Saga debuted in early January at home running seventh behind Le Chef before being turned out for a spell to mature, which she came back from on May 9 to break her maiden status over 1200m with a win at the Gold Coast by half a length.

That form held at Doomben in the first today with Sagaronne saluting at a juicy price in the $100,000 Listed Bracken Ridge Tavern The Phoenix (1350m) thanks to a perfectly timed ride from jockey Blake Shinn who is enjoying plenty of success this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

All the money post-race was on the Godolphin-owned Handfast who jumped away well form barrier four to go up early along with the Nick Olive-trained Bring A Secret, coming off a sixth behind Look To The Stars in last weekend’s Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m).

After they settled into stride Bring A Secret led from Trevor Miller’s Real Saga gelding and last start Listed BJ McLachlan Stakes winner at the Sunshine Coast Real Good who did the early work from a wide barrier to get up into second.

Handfast and jockey James McDonald meanwhile got a gun run in third sitting on the outside, the favourite perfectly positioned to strike while Aussie Jack got the rails run along the fence.

Just off those were the likes of the Liam Birchley-trained Havasay and Sagaronne who Shinn had settled perfectly saving up for the late run.

As they approached the turn for home Handfast started to move up three deep on the outside as Bring A Secret led form Real Good into the straight.

Market mover Handfast ($2.60) and Sagaronne ($13) quickly came after the frontrunner and with 50m to go it was the latter who pushed forward to salute for Shinn, the favourite chasing hard and running down Bring A Secret ($3.60) but unable to hold off the winner.

It was a photo for third with Bring A Secret holding for the last minor place on the rails.

There is a chance Edmonds will now keep Sagaronne in Brisbane and back the filly up in Saturday week’s $600,000 Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) back at the track on Stradbroke Handicap Day or if not the big one give her a shot in easier company in the $100,000 Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) against her own kind at the same meeting.
