2015 Lightning Handicap Winner Whittington Off to Stud

Trainer John Thompson persevered with four-year-old stallion Whittington who scored a final black-type win in the Lightning Handicap 2015 at Doomben Racecourse before heading off to stud.

Recently sold as a stallion prospect, the Tale Of The Cat entire trounced them late in a smart last-to-first victory in the $100,000 Listed Ascend Sales Trophies Lightning Handicap (1050m) on Queensland Oaks Day.

Drawn in the outside alley (10 of 10), jockey Ric McMahon switched the horse off and allowed Whittington to settle at the back of the field as the Tom Bourke-trained Rocky King and his hoop Hugh Bowman led them round in the Lightning.

Beginning brilliantly, Easy Rocking five-year-old Rocky King went to the front while the Matt Kropp-trained Thinkhesaurus swept up to settle into second spot just ahead of Gold Coast-based mare Prettyfamous who was first-up today.

In fourth and settled nicely on the fence getting a gun run was then Tony Gollan’s rails-drawn local hope The Storeman ridden by Timothy Bell who won the Queensland Oaks at this meeting 12 months ago aboard Tinto.

With 500m to go Stephen Lee’s 59kg topweight Territory started to pick up and make up ground coming along the rail, which proved the position to be in as they ran into the straight.

Rocky King held the lead with 300m to go but was quickly picked up by Whittington who went straight down the fence along the rail making up all the ground from last in the field to trounce them.

One the line Whittington ($9) held a comfortable lead over the Sunshine Coast-based Rocky King ($15) who did well to hold on for second and improve on a dead last in the Bribie Handicap back home from a fortnight ago, while The Storeman ($4.60) finished off the Lightning Handicap trifecta in third.

Last year’s Lightning Handicap winner Big Money backed-up to complete a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival double with success in the $175,000 Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m), a sprint showdown held this year at the Gold Coast on Tattersall’s Tiara Day, June 20.

Another winter target that is possibly on the agenda for the best out of today’s race is the $150,000 Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) held at Grafton on July 15.
