2015 Bright Shadow Handicap Winner is Dublin Lass

Peter & Paul Snowden’s race favourite Dublin Lass saluted for the punters in the Bright Shadow Handicap 2015 winning the Queensland Oaks Day in a lovely effort at Doomben Racecourse.

The in-form O’Reilly mare jumped at the top of the odds for this year’s $100,000 Listed Mittys Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) the fillies-and-mares’ feature boasting a capacity field of 16 starters that went around the track very quickly.

Running identical time as the Group 2 QTC Cup winner Ball Of Muscle the race before, four-year-old Dublin Lass was ridden by Tommy Berry who was full of pre-race confidence.

“I thought she was my best ride on the card,” he said after the win.

“Snowden had mapped out her preparation perfectly.

“I thought she was my best ride on paper and Peter’s found the perfect race for her here.”

That confidence paid off in the run even though the hoop found himself settled back further in the field than originally intended.

“They went quicker than I thought,” Berry said.

While co-trainer Peter Snowden may have been sweating mid-race about the position of the favourite, Berry came good in the end riding Dublin Lass down the outside to victory.

“I’m sure he was happy at the end,” the winning hoop added.

The eventual winner was the first to jump but settled centre field off the pace set by the Barry Lockwood-trained Hidden Pearl.

A winner of her three lead-up runs into the Bright Shadow, four-year-old Hidden Pearl was ridden in the feature by apprentice Bridget Grylls who pounced on the early lead along the rails.

She led from the Chris Waller-trained Champagne Cath who was second-up after finishing fourth over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast on May 16 while the John O’Shea-trained Miniature, another Sydney visitor racing second-up off a resuming fourth place finish, and roughie shot Glenbawn Dame battled for third and fourth after settling.

Hidden Pearl led them into the straight before the challengers moved up over the closing stages including Dublin Lass ($3.30) who put herself into the race at the right time moving up from sixth spot to eat up the ground over the final 300m.

She and Berry scorched down the outside covering metres quickly before hitting the front 50m out to beat Toby Edmond’s last start Ipswich winning Shamardal four-year-old Glenbawn Dame ($41) with Hidden Pearl ($5.50) holding for third.

The Bright Shadow Handicap winner could back-up at the Gold Coast in a fortnight on June 20 with a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
