Currie Confident in Queensland Oaks Hope Col ‘N’ Lil

Toowoomba-based trainer Ben Currie was tossing up whether or not to enter Col ‘N’ Lil in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben but is confident she is more than a chance for success after reviewing her run in last weekend’s Group 2 The Roses (2000m).

Col ‘N’ Lil was a comfortably-beaten second behind Bohemian Lily in The Roses but after reviewing the tapes, Currie was thrilled with the fortitude displayed by the daughter of Bradbury’s Luck, who held pace wide for the race’s entire 2000m.

Having drawn the ideal barrier 5 for the 2015 Queensland Oaks, Currie is confident the conditions of the race will play into her strengths and believes she is in the right form for a big upset on Saturday.

“She was wide for most of the way and then she was the one who had to do the chasing after Bohemian Lily who was freewheeling in front,” Currie told AAP.

“The winner looked sensational but my filly kept coming like a good horse as well.

“We are ideally drawn in barrier five while a couple of the better fancies are drawn very wide.”

Col ‘N’ Lil has been a standout performer for Currie since first appearing on course in 2014 and the trainer revealed he has had the filly set for the Oaks from almost her first start this time.

“It wasn’t until she ran a really good second to Tony Gollan‘s horse Sheiswhatsheis at Doomben we thought we might have something that was a genuine Oaks chance,” he added.

“If you look at her form it is the right type to win the Queensland Oaks. She was second in the Gold Coast Bracelet, fourth in the Princess Stakes and then second in The Roses.

“She has the kilometres in her legs and she does one thing – try.”

Winning a minor over 1300m first-up on March 28th, Col ‘N’ Lil placed second in her next two starts including the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) on April 25th.

Having run a credible fourth in the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m) in what was her only other start prior to The Roses, Col ‘N’ Lil is currently available at 2015 Queensland Oaks odds of $34 with leading online bookie
