The Eagle Farm Cup 2015 may have attracted a far from below capacity field of final acceptors but it is still shaping up as a top race to enjoy a punt on at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
Sydney’s Chris Waller dominates the seven-horse field for this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Pages Event Equipment Hire Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) saddling up five of the hopes in Doomben Race 4 at 1:57pm (AEST) on Queensland Oaks Day.
Leading the latest Eagle Farm Cup odds at $4 is one of those Waller hopes, Foreteller in barrier two with the in-form James McDonald to ride.
He is followed very closely in the markets however by the defending Eagle Farm Cup winner Moriarty ($4.20) who is drawn in gate one attempting to give Waller back-to-back wins in the weight-for-age clash and the Kiwi youngster in the mix Werther ($4.40).
So will Waller’s host of hopefuls steal the show or is there an upset Eagle Farm Cup result on the agenda this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival?
#4 I’m Imposing ($6)
The money is coming for Waller’s in-form market mover who has been backed in from $6.50 to $6 to win from the outside alley with Tye Angland riding. Hard to fault the lead-up form of this veteran son of Danehill Dancer who despite being a rising 10-year-old has run third in three major races this time in. The first was in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast before his effort behind Pornichet in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and then behind stablemate Strawberry Boy in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) last weekend. Can handle the short back-up and while this is his first look at 2200m, with winning form up to 2100m it looks ideal for this 41-start champ.
#5 Index Linked ($7)
While Waller could actually run 1 – 5 in this without too much argument, for second there’s plenty to like about his seven-year-old gelding Index Linked who won the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. That followed on from a second to Epingle (a $10 chance for Saturday’s rematch in the EF Cup) in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast, so he has form over Saturday’s tricky distance. This will be his first kick about Doomben but if he handles the tight track is a genuine contender.
#7 Werther ($4.40)
Just to spice it up we’ll go a non-Waller runner to fill third spot and add the three-year-old New Zealander in. Andrew Campbell’s Tavistock gelding won a Group 2 race over 2100m back home in late April then came down under going to Adelaide and running second to Delicacy in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m). Against the older horses this time in a state he’s never raced in but the drop back in distance should suit and the Morphettville run against his own age was solid.
