Black Jet Will Need Luck in Spear Chief Quality

Black Jet will step-up to a mile for the first time this preparation in Saturday’s Listed Spear Chief Quality at Doomben, but trainer Liam Birchley believes the five-year-old will need the run to find competitive condition.

Posting seven wins and a further four minors over 21 career starts so far, Black Jet returned to racing in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1300m) on the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago but was unable to make anything of an impact and finishing a forgettable 14th.

While pleased with the condition and work completed by the Jet Spur gelding over the last week, Birchley told Racing Ahead he has been set for metro appearances further down the track and will largely use the 2015 Spear Chief Quality as a stepping stone.

“He’s going to the mile and will probably need it a touch second-up,” Birchley said.

“There’s a couple of nice races coming up after this weekend and it’s probably a bit of a stepping stone.

“He’ll be ready to do something after that I think.”

Stamping his claims as one to watch from his first competitive appearance on course in late 2012, Black Jet was a standout performer over an impressive 2013/14 summer campaign; running third in each of the Ambassador Travel Handicap (1400m) and RPQ BM85 (1600m) before posting consecutive wins over notable opposition in the Stephen Ferguson Handicap (1660m) and Carlton Draught Plate (1600m).

Set on a campaign through the Melbourne spring and summer carnivals most recently, the gelding out Black Velvet was unlucky to finish just outside the first three in each of the Subzero Greys Challenge (1500m) and Schweppes BM84 (1600m); returning to Brisbane for back-to-back successes in the Brisbane Marriott Hotel Plate (1600m) and Listed Members’ Cup (1600m). is currently offering the best 2015 Spear Chief Quality odds, for which Black Jet can be taken at a quote of $11 for success.

Frespanol ($2.15) continues to lead markets ahead of Trakstar ($6.50) and Darci Be Good ($8).
