The Murtajill gelding has won two of his five career starts to date and will look for a hat-trick of turf triumphs in the $20,000 GA $10 Tix June 13 Ratings Band 0 – 75 Handicap (1350m) at the midweek Ipswich meeting.

Carrying the equal 59kg top weight with Melbourne jockey Chris Symons in the saddle from barrier one, Murt The Flirt comes off a second to Monkstone at Pakenham Park over 1200m when beaten under half a length on May 17.

As yet untested in black type company, the young galloper is best known for his fifth when under two and a half lengths off Deiheros in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast back in January.

His Caulfield-based trainer McCarthy is hoping to change that however on June 6 at Doomben Racecourse running Murt The Flirt in the $400,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day up over the mile.

For today’s Ipswich run Murt The Flirt is the odds-on favourite paying $1.95 through Ladbrokes.com.au with the next best in betting being the Robert Heathcote-trained five-year-old Written Above All ($6) who is drawn at the opposite end of the field.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to get the box seat and get the run at the right time,” McCarthy told Racing Ahead on Wednesday morning speaking of this afternoon’s run.

“Probably the fact that he is looking for a bit more ground will really suit him as well.”

McCarthy is hoping the early run the Queensland way of racing will help give his up-and-comer the edge when he steps up in class for the Guineas bid in Brisbane.

“We’ve gone up to try and get a run under his belt before we tackle the Guineas on Saturday week,” McCarthy said.

“He pulled up exceptionally well after his last start. He travelled up last Friday, got there Saturday night and has done really well since.

“Getting this run under his belt before the major one, it should work out well.”
