Triple Group 1 winner Luckygray will look for back-to-back autumn / winter wins at Belmont Park in WA backing up from a victory in the Roma Cup in this Saturday’s Belmont Sprint 2015.
The now Trevor Andrews-trained Bradbury’s Luck seven-year-old is one of just nine sprinters accepted to face off in the $150,000 Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) under weight-for-age conditions in Perth on the weekend.
Due to run as Belmont Race 7 at 4:12pm (local), this year’s line-up is led by Andrew’s $2.7 million earner Luckygray who returned to racing off a year long let-up to win the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) at the track he returns to this Saturday.
Having won five from six at Belmont now, Luckygray is sure to sit top of the Belmont Sprint odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to salute for the fifth time at his 12th go over 1400m with jockey Shaun O’Donnell riding the champion from an ideal barrier three draw.
The next best two over the line behind Luckygray in the Roma Cup trifecta from a fortnight ago also back-up in the Belmont Sprint with runner-up Dawn Approach and third-placed Fuchsia Bandana drawn in barriers six and five respectively for the rematch.
Vaughn Sigley’s Statue Of Liberty four-year-old Dawn Approach won the Listed Northam Toyota Stakes (1100m) first-up on May 3 before finishing only a neck away second in the Roma Cup, Saturday his second look at the 1400m with the first producing a black type third back in March behind Black Heart Bart.
Fuchsia Bandana meanwhile has Ben Kennedy in the saddle again second-up this weekend, Darren McAuliffe’s Lark Hill-based Trade Fair mare having finished fifth in both the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot during the summer before resuming with the good Roma Cup effort when still under a length off Luckygray.
Aside from Luckygray the only other last start winner in the Belmont Sprint field this weekend is the Justin Warwick-trained Brother Patrick in barrier four with apprentice Lucy Warwick riding as the veteran galloper shoots for his third straight win.
An eight-year-old son of Anabaa, Brother Patrick has won twice over the Belmont mile this month including his latest only last weekend when holding off Willow Bridge by a half-length after jumping from barrier 13 of 13.
Rounding out the Belmont Sprint hopes this season are then the rails-drawn Ranger for Adam Durrant, Grant Williams’s Shining Knight coming off a fifth in the Roma Cup, the returning Neville Parnham-trained Bass Strait and Balmont Girl for Paula Wagg in the outside alley.
