Banca Mo Heads 2015 Spear Chief Handicap Field & Weights

Recent Mornington Cup winner Banca Mo is the top-rated and weighted galloper in the Spear Chief Handicap 2015 field for this weekend at Doomben Racecourse, the mile showdown running as part of the Queensland Oaks Day line-up.

Scheduled to run as Doomben Race 3 at 1:17pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed James Boag’s Premium Spear Chief Handicap (1630m) originally drew a final field of 12 hopefuls but the early scratching of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Great Esteem who drew the outside alley leaves 11 runners for the weekend.

The Bevan Laming-trained Banca Mo is the 59kg top weight and has a minimum three kilos more than any other horse in the field to carry around the tight Doomben circuit, Michael Cahill booked for the ride from gate four.

Cahill replaces Dean Holland in the saddle of the Tough Speed seven-year-old who is out to atone for a disappointing 11th to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) from the start of the month when carrying 59kg.

Following Banca Mo in the Spear Chief Handicap weights with 56kg is then the Andrew Williamson-trained Darci Be Good jumping from gate two with top Brisbane hoop Damian Browne in the saddle.

After a first-up sixth at Doomben on April 11 the Darci Brahma six-year-old has been in improving form winning in the wet at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m on May 3 then running second at his home track again when up over 1800m.

The rest of the field are all on the 54kg minimum in the Spear Chief this year including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Frespanol in gate nine with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride.

Having run top four in all of his runs this time in, the Choisir four-year-old was last seen stepping up to black type company in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) when runner-up by a nose behind Tales Of Grimm on May 15.

Two Queensland trainers have dual Spear Chief Handicap final acceptors this winter including Tony Gollan who is set to saddle-up Stratum gelding Trackstar and stablemate Tornado Miss in barriers six and five respectively.

Trackstar won over the track and distance two back before a third behind Bewhatyouwannabe in the Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) from May 9.

Timothy Bell’s mount, four-year-old Snitzel mare Tornado Miss meanwhile also comes via the Members’ Handicap but ran a disappointing ninth when beaten over five lengths.

Also with dual hopes is Eagle Farm-based Brian Smith with seven-year-old Billy Aucash with the rails run from barrier one and six-year-old mare Elusive Storm in gate eight for jockey Larry Cassidy.

Other notable Spear Chief Handicap hopefuls this year include the Liam Birchely-trained black type winner Black Jet looking to add to a nice second-up record (4-2-0-1) and Tony Sears’ recent Weetwood Handicap third placed gelding Choice Bro.
