2015 Queensland Day Field Features Undefeated Cantbuybetter

Ben Currie’s young gelding Cantbuybetter will be out to retain his undefeated status when stepping up in class for a shot at the Queensland Day 2015 at Doomben Racecourse this weekend.

Bringing the action of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival’s Queensland Oaks Day to a close as Doomben Race 8 at 4:32pm (AEST) this Saturday, the $100,000 Listed Nuturf Queensland Day (1200m) features a final field of 15 three-year-olds.

Three of those come off a last start win including Currie’s Toowoomba-based son of Casino Prince, Cantbutybetter drawn wide in barrier 12 with to Sydney hoop Hugh Bowman in the saddle of the undefeated youngster.

A winner of all four of his starts to date the horse is a dual winner over Saturday’s distance and is first-up having last been seen winning over 1350m at the Doomben track back on February 7.

The other two three-year-olds in the mix who won their latest starts are the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Melbourne visitor Durendal and She’s Miss Devine for local horseman Kelso Wood, both drawn well in barriers six and one respectively.

Craig Williams rides Medaglia D’Oro gelding Durendal who has won his last two on the trot over 1200m at Caulfield this month to give him an excellent record of three wins and a third from four over the distance ahead of the weekend where he has just his second black type start after a ninth in Adelaide’s Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m) back in late April.

She’s Miss Devine meanwhile gets the run of the race from barrier one on Oaks Day, Ryan Wiggins retaining the mount on the Show A Heart filly who won over 1000m defeating Outback Saga by half a length at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago.

The Stewart Mackinnon-trained runner-up in that same handicap sprint, Outback Saga is another filly backing-up in the Queensland Day on the weekend, which will be her fifth look at Doomben.

The top-rated of the hopefuls is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Peggy Jean who has suffered an early blow drawing the outside barrier 15 draw for jockey Blake Shinn to overcome on the former Group 1 winner.

The daughter of Myboycharlie is best known for her Group 1 Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) victory at Randwick in April last year, which was also her last time in the winner’s stall, Peggy Jean out to improve on a last start ninth to Catkins in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill back on March 28.

Also high up the ratings are the Chris Waller-trained Good Project and Mohave for Goldolphin’s private trainer John O’Shea.

A super-consistent placegetter, Not A Single Doubt colt Good Project won over the Randwick mile back in January before retuning on May 9 at Rosehill to finish three quarters of a length away second to Kaepernick in a Benchmark 78 ahead of his Queensland debut in Brisbane on Saturday.

O’Shea’s runner Mohave is third-up with James McDonald booked for the ride on the Exceed And Excel gelding who ran fifth in the same race that produced Waller’s Good Project for the Queensland Day.

Other notable Queensland Day hopes include the Steven O’Dea-trained Beau Jet and the lightly-raced local Encosta De Lago filly Golden Falls.
