Sydney’s Joe Pride launches a dual-pronged assault on the QTC Cup 2015 field in Brisbane on Saturday saddling-up two livewire chances in the Doomben support act on Queensland Oaks Day.
Running as Doomben Race 5 at 2:37pm (AEST), this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Magic Millions QTC Cup (1200m) features a small field of only eight final acceptors including two for Pride.
Pride’s top chance and one of the likely favourites in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the consistent Ball Of Muscle who comes off back-to-back seconds this time in and who has come up trumps with barrier one for the weekend.
Jockey Glyn Schofield has the ride on the super-consistent Dubawi four-year-old who boasts a great record of seven wins, four seconds and a third from 12 starts to date.
Winner of the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford in January, Ball Of Muscle ran second first-up at Flemington over 1000m before a last start second this time behind Group 1 placed mare Srikandi in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at the Gold Coast on April 25.
To bring him on fitness wise since then with a month between the Victory and Saturday’s QTC Cup clash, the Warwick Farm-based Pride ran Ball Of Muscle in a 735m Randwick trial on Monday which the horse won on a Heavy (9) track with Schofield aboard.
Pride’s other hope on Saturday is then Kuro drawn one beside his stablemate in barrier two for jockey Craig Williams, the three-year-old Denman colt coming off a win at the track and distance in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate from May 9.
Runner-up to Sweet Idea in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in Sydney back in March, Kuro is a young gun in a gun draw and a livewire chance after doing it tough from barrier 13 of 14 to win his lead-up run in his maiden Queensland start.
The two other last start winners in the QTC Cup field are then the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained That’s A Good Idea in gate eight for Hugh Bowman and Darren Bell’s Falino.
Flying Spur five-year-old That’s A Good Ideal was dead last behind Weary in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in late January but returned on May 16 with a nice three-quarter length win over Target In Sight in Scone’s Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m).
Falino, in barrier five this weekend, meanwhile is a seven-year-old vet who enjoyed a win in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago.
Carrying the 59kg top weight in this year’s QTC Cup is the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Kiwi visitor El Roca, Tommy Berry aboard the Fastnet Rock stallion who is second-up after a below par 11th to Hot Snitzel in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) earlier in the month.
Rounding out the QTC Cup field this winter are then the Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars who ran third in the Victory Stakes two back, Peter Moody’s Bribie Handicap fourth placed Office Bearer and the Liam Birchely-trained Time To Plunder.
