2015 Bright Shadow Handicap Field Features Little Brown Horse

Kelly Doughty’s in-form Gold Coast-trained mare Little Brown Horse gets the chance to bag a Brisbane black-type on the weekend in the Bright Shadow Handicap 2015 at Doomben Racecourse but must do it from a wide gate.

One of the notable support races on a nice Queensland Oaks Day line-up this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the $100,000 Listed Mittys Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) for fillies and mares features a bumper final field of 16 hopefuls facing off in Race 6 at 3:17pm (AEST).

One of the top-rated and coming off a win is apprentice hoop Geoffrey Goold’s mount Little Brown Horse who broke a lengthy drought when winning over the 1400m at the Sunshine Coast on May 16.

That followed a solid fourth behind I’ve Got The Looks in the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) back home on April 25, form the Waterford Road six-year-old is looking to continue at Doomben on the weekend.

Little Brown Horse however has suffered an early blow drawing out in barrier 14.

Also out wide in this year’s Bright Shadow Handicap field are the likes of Grant Marshall’s five-year-old Slots (16) coming off a Listed third at Scone from May 16 over 1300m, the Jason McLachlan-trained Group 2 placed Stratum four-year-old Enquare (15), equal 58kg top weight Real Surreal (13) for Brisbane’s Kelso Wood and the returning Clarry Conners-trained Fare Well (12) last seen running fifth to Mamwaazel in Gosford’s Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) from January.

Better Bright Shadow Handicap barriers meanwhile belong to the rails-drawn Saturn Rock who won the Listed Nudgee Quality (1200m) at the track in late January, Toby Edmonds’s last start Ipswich winning Shamardal four-year-old Glenbawn Dame (barrier two) and the Barry Lockwood-trained Hidden Pearl (barrier three).

A four-year-old daughter of Hidden Dragon, Hidden Pearl has won her past three on the trot at three separate Queensland tracks including one at Doomben on April 22 and a last start effort at Toowoomba at the start of the month that she won by over five lengths.

Other last start winners in the Bright Shadow line-up for Saturday include the Matthew Dunn-trained Athena Fire who is second-up after a 1200m victory at Ipswich from May 13 and the Jon Walk-trained Tanget who Tegan Harrison rides replacing Bridge Grylls aboard the New Approach four-year-old for a 1100m win at Gatton a fortnight ago.

Also of note in the female-only handicap clash at Doomben this weekend are Chris Waller’s Group 2 placed Street Sense four-year-old Champagne Cath coming off a fourth to Little Brown Horse at the Sunshine Coast, Peter & Paul Snowden’s last start Junamo Stakes runner-up Dublin Lass at the track, the John O’Shea-trained Miniature and yet another Sydney visitor in Joe Pride’s in-form Bonete.
