2015 Queensland Oaks Title: Don’t Write off the Kiwi Warns Browne

All the money for this weekend’s Queensland Oaks 2015 in Brisbane is on the Chris Waller-trained Winx and fellow Sydney raider Bohemian Lily, but local hoop Damian Browne is more than happy to partner the Kiwi in the mix Platinum Witness.

Waller’s ATC Oaks runner-up Winx shot to the top of the Ladbrokes.com.au odds for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben Racecourse, the daughter of Street Cry at a current quote of $2.45 for the win, after her last-to-first win in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) from May 16.

Bohemian Lily from the Gai Waterhouse stables then shot into $5.50 second favouritism in the all-in Queensland Oaks odds after she continued her ace lead-up form with an all-too-easy four length victory in the Group 2 The Roses (2020m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Further down the Queensland Oaks betting markets at $13 is then Browne’s mount, the Lisa Latta-trained New Zealander Platinum Witness whose jockey warns not to write her off for an upset in the latest Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival Group 1.

California Dane filly Platinum Witness was runner-up behind Savaria in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) back in mid-March before a second again this time over 1400m in the mud back home on May 9 then her Australian race debut in The Roses.

While it was well fancied by both the bookies and punters, the New Zealand form didn’t stack up in the traditional Oaks lead-up run with Platinum Witness finishing a well-beaten sixth beaten over seven lengths by Bohemian Lily.

Browne was aboard in The Roses, which has produced all but one of the Queensland Oaks winners in the past 10 years, and believes there is big improvement to come from the filly he sticks with for the big one this Saturday.

“She was on the wrong leg the whole way and was never comfortable,” he told The Courier Mail.

“She will be better from that experience. I think if she draws a barrier for the Oaks and races generously she can be there at the business end of the race.”
