Les Bridge’s smart mare Avoid Lightning is currently heading towards the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival for Saturday week’s Dane Ripper Stakes 2015 but could still bypass the Queensland feature for a Sydney run on the same day instead.
The six-year-old daughter of Blevic put in a beautiful trial in Sydney on Monday morning ahead of her next run, Avoid Lightning last seen running eighth behind Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide on May 2.
She was defeated under two lengths that run on the back of a Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) victory over Griante at Randwick on April 11 during The Championships, and Bridge was more than happy with her efforts in the Morphettville Group 1.
“Nothing went right for her at Morphettville,” Bridge told The Daily Telegraph.
“We drew the visitor’s draw and she was never on the track.
“She ran eighth but was beaten less than two lengths, so her run very good.”
Bridge also though the mare’s barrier trial at Royal Randwick on Monday morning was good, the mare beating home Peter & Paul Snowden’s recent BTC Cup winner Hot Snitzel over 1050m in the third hitout of the meeting run on a Heavy (9) track in a time of 1:05.10 seconds.
“She trialled really well which is what I wanted to see,” Bridge said.
Also in the star-studded trial was Chris Waller’s smart grey Dubai mare Catkins, last seen running second to Amanpour in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Hugh Bowman rode Catkins into third a length away from Avoid Lightning who she is set to clash with a number of times over the coming weeks.
Both mares are now likely to back-up in the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 6.
Bridge however also hasn’t ruled out a black type run in Sydney on the same day for Avoid Lightning instead on way to the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast on June 20 where both her and fellow Group 2 winner Catkins will chase a long overdue Group 1 victory.
“At this stage we are looking at taking her to Brisbane although the June Stakes at Randwick is an option,” he said.
“But she won that race last year carrying 59kg and since then she has won a Group 3 (The Nivison) and a Group 2 (Sapphire Stakes) so she will probably get too much weight.”
