Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sydney-based horseman Bjorn Baker is confident he has his smart filly Sebrina fit and ready for a big Queensland Oaks 2015 show at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday despite her unplaced Randwick run from the weekend.
The three-year-old daughter of Sebring has had seven starts to date for two wins, the latest of which was on a Heavy (9) at Warwick Farm over the mile on May 6.
She backed up from that at Royal Randwick on Saturday and ran on a mud track to cross a luckless fourth when beaten two and a quarter lengths behind High Midnight in a Benchmark 73.
While she didn’t win Baker saw enough in that run, which was her first look at further than 1600m, to give him confidence in a trip to the Sunshine State this Saturday for the $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m).
“She was good this morning and there’s not a lot we will do about what occurred. I assume everybody is aware of she ought to have gained,” he told the Gazette Herald on Saturday.
Jockey Glen Boss is booked to ride Sebrina in the Queensland Oaks this weekend taking over for apprentice Brodie Loy who has been aboard for her two most recent runs to give her the weight relief, including on Saturday when she was badly blocked for a run.
“We’re fortunate to have a corridor of fame jockey within the saddle and I can inform you we’ve not seen the most effective of her but,” Baker said.
“We determined to go this manner together with her and goal the Oaks on one journey, slightly than staying up there and we’ll discover out if it was the fitting transfer on the weekend.”
There are still officially 32 three-year-old fillies nominated for the Queensland Oaks this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including Sebrina who occupies the third line of all-in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $7.
The early Queensland Oaks odds are firmly led by Chris Waller’s Sunshine Coast Guineas winner Winx ($2.45) followed by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bohemian Lily ($5) who scored an impressive four length victory in the Group 2 The Roses (2020m) at Doomben over the weekend.
Sebrina is the next best fancied then to score not only her first Group 1 win but black type success.
To date her only stakes assignment was in the Group 3 JHB Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 18 when she ran third to Slightly Sweet.
The final 2015 Queensland Oaks acceptances revealing the field close on Wednesday morning and will be published right here at Races.com.au so stay tuned.
