2015 Spear Chief Handicap Nominations

Nominations are now out for the Spear Chief Handicap 2015 at Doomben Racecourse this weekend, the black type mile clash one of a host of support races on the Queensland Oaks Day program in Brisbane.

A bumper list of 18 early entries makes up the possible runners in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed James Boag’s Premium Spear Chief Handicap (1600m), one of the best interstate entries being the Gai Waterhouse-trained Frespanol.

The Choisir four-year-old has winning form up to 1500m and comes off a second behind Tales Of Grimm in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) from May 15.

Other notable hopes from outside of Queensland include Bevan Laming’s recent Mornington Cup winner Banca Mo, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Great Esteem and from even further abroad Kiwi gelding Werther.

A three-year-old son of Tavistock, Werther won the Group 2 Championship Stakes (2100m) in the wet back home on April 18 before travelling down under for Adelaide’s Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 9.

There he ran a brave second behind star WA filly Delicacy, form connections are hoping he can take to Queensland when dropped right down in distance if accepted for the Spear Chief this weekend.

As for the local hopes there’s plenty including three for Tony Gollan who has nominated for four-year-old Snitzel mare Tornado Miss, in-form Stratum gelding Trackstar coming off a third in the Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) from the start of the month and veteran seven-year-old Zoomania.

Other major Brisbane stables represented include Liam Birchely’s with his track specialist Black Jet who has won four from nine at Doomben and Robert Heathcote who prepares evergreen seven-year-old Tail And All.

Also at the mix for the Spear Chief Handicap at nomination stage include the Tony Sears-trained Weetwood Handicap placegetter Choice Bro from Toowoomba, Gold Coast galloper Noisy Ocean who has his 28th Doomben start next time at the track, the Ben Currie-trained Tycoon Ruler mare Tints and Darci Be Good.

Formerly prepared by Bede Murray, the Darci Brahma six-year-old is now trained at the Sunshine Coast by Andrew Williamson and of late has enjoyed a rejuvenated patch of form.

A veteran of 45 starts for just the seven wins and over $612,000 in prize money, Darci Be Good won at the Sunshine Coast in the wet on a Heavy (9) track over 1400m on May 3 before a second in a Benchmark 95 back there on May 16 over 1800m.
