A dual nominee across the Queensland Oaks Day card at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday, the Darren Bell-trained Falino is one of the headline entries for the Lightning Handicap 2015.
Also in the mix for the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Millions QTC Cup (1200m) on the latest Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival Group 1 program, the Deagon-based Fusaichi Pegasus seven-year-old is one of 17 entries for the $100,000 Listed Ascend Sales Trophies Lightning Handicap (1050m).
Whichever race he runs in, Falino will shoot for back-to-back wins.
Last time out the veteran sprinter posted his ninth win at start number 37 with a quarter-length effort over Seeking More at the Sunshine Coast on May 16 in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1000m) ahead of a step up to 1200m, which he has own three of his past five starts over.
There are a number of sprinters nominated for both the QTC Cup and Lightning Handicap this winter including the Donald Baker-trained Falvelon six-year-old Mr Favulous who was last seen winning the Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) at Toowoomba on May 2, Peter Moody’s last start Bribie Handicap third placed stallion Office Bearer and Whittington from the John Thompson stables.
Along with Mr Favulous the only other Lighting Handicap nominee coming off a win is the flying Barry Lockwood-trained mare Hidden Pearl.
A four-year-old daughter of Hidden Dragon, the local hope Hidden Pearl has won all three of her starts this time in including her latest over 1000m at Toowoomba at the start of the month.
She also has a good record over Saturday’s distance with three wins and a second from six starts, good form ahead of the weekend’s black type test where she’ll be out to become the second last start winner in as many years to win the Lightning after Cape Kidnappers completed the Chief De Beers – Lightning Handicap double 12 months ago.
Other notable Lightning Handicap nominations for 2015 edition of the quality handicap sprint include the Danny Bougoure-trained Exceed And Excel mare Louisiana Rouge up in class for this, four-time winner over the distance from nine start Thinkhesaurus and Kelso Wood’s Seeking More.
A five-year-old son of Sequalo, Seeking More has run second in three of his past four starts since the start of March including behind Falino when beaten a quarter-length in the Bribie Handicap on the back of a fifth behind Rocket To Glory in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap (1100m) at Doomben.
