Upham Onto Derby After 2015 Grand Prix Stakes Win

Peter Moody’s in-form galloper Upham has booked a spot near the top of the Queensland Derby odds for the Group 1 run on June 6 after his winning effort in the Grand Prix Stakes 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.

A bumper field of three-year-olds heading towards the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) next month on Stradbroke Handicap Day faced off in the traditional lead-up on Doomben 10,000 Day, the $150,000 Group 3 Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes (2020m).

The race has produced two of the past three Queensland Derby winners and looks the form line to follow again in 2015.

Race favourite was the Chris Waller-trained Sadler’s Lake who won the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at the track on May 9.

He had the extreme outside barrier in the big Grand Prix field and jockey Blake Shinn rode him very positively from the jump, Sadler’s Lake going over to cross with Jumbo Prince going with him in the early part putting on a good tempo.

Sadler’s Lake finally got right across to lead from the Rough Habit Plate third-placed Toowoomba galloper Jumbo Prince and Waller’s improving colt Redoutable Heart.

Master Of Arts meanwhile got into a beautiful spot in fourth tucked on the fence biding his time just ahead of Upham.

With 900m left to travel the pressure was put on the leader very early, a line of four working across after the likes of the Moody-trained Inauguration, Lucoblu and Jumbo Prince put Sadler’s Lake under siege.

Darren Weir’s lightly-raced but progressive Mastercraftsman colt Master Of Arts, ridden by Brad Rawiller, meanwhile was working to get up on the fence and put himself in the finish.

Round the bend Sadler’s Lake and Jumbo Prince held the lead with plenty of others starting to run on.

Upham made the quick sprint over the final couple of hundred metres and raced up to snare the lead 100m out.

On the line it was the consistent grey Upham ($14), second also in the Gunsynd Classic on the Gold Coast before the Rough Habit placing, at good odds who won from the James McDonald-ridden Redoutable Heart ($13) with Master Of Arts ($8.50) an eye-catching third.

Early impressions off the run are that Weir’s New Zealand-bred Master Of Arts, having just his fifth career start in the Grand Prix off a 2000m win at Caulfield from May 2, could be the one to beat in the Queensland Derby.

After his first run the Queensland way of going there looks to be only improvement and upside in the Melbourne visitor who is sure to shoot up the all-in Queensland Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Upham is also set to feature prominently in the early Derby markets after displaying good staying action off a lovely run where he was camped in behind the frontrunners, winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy using tactical speed and the horse’s fitness to score the win.
