Royal Randwick Track Report & Scratchings – 23/05/2015

The Sydney racing scene this Saturday is headlined by a black type meeting at Royal Randwick Racecourse where the 2015 WJ McKell Cup will take centre stage at the rain-affected course.

It is a cool day in Sydney trackside at Randwick today with a top of only 18 degrees and a partly cloudy day on the agenda with no chance of further rain falling on an already very wet track.

At 7:45am (AEST) this morning the Randwick course proper was rated a Heavy (10), the worst rating before abandonment, and there have been a number of abandoned meetings across New South Wales recently including Newcastle today.

The Royal Randwick meeting is still officially on however but it will be a case of getting behind the known wet track performers in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Randwick Track Report – 23/05/2015

  • Rail: +3m Entire Circuit
  • Penetrometer: 6.23
  • Weather: Overcast
  • Track Rating: Heavy (10)
  • Track Type: Turf

Racing is due to kick off in Sydney this afternoon at 12:00pm (AEST) with the $85,000 Fresh For Kids Plate (1200m) for the two-year-olds and continue through until Race 8 brings things to a close at 4:25pm (AEST) with a depleted field for the $85,000 Save Our Sons Handicap (1400m).

The heavy track has seen a total of 31 scratchings across the card, the feature race of which is the $100,000 Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) running as Race 6 at 3:05pm (AEST).

From the original 12 starter WJ McKell Cup field two come out with the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Rawnaq and Chris Waller’s Rezoned the official two scratchings.

WJ McKell Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, home of the $500 new depositor bonus this season, features a number of single figure hopes with wet track form including the current market mover and $3.20 favourite (in from $4.60) Major Major.

The Bryce Heys-trained six-year-old has two wins from three previous starts on Heavy ground, both those wins coming at his latest two starts when saluting over the 2400m at Randwick on a Heavy (8) on April 25 and then a Heavy (9) over the same distance at Warwick Farm last start on May 6.
