The Roses 2015 Betting Tips

The 2015 The Roses runs at Doomben Racecourse this weekend with a field of three-year-old fillies looking to stake their claims for Saturday week’s Queensland Oaks, our insider betting tips on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival showdown found below.

Bohemian Lily

There are 13 fillies left in the field for Saturday’s $175,000 Group 2 Urbis The Roses (2020m), running as Doomben 10,000 Day Race 7 at 3:17pm (AEST), after the early scratching of Sebrina and the red hot favourite Ballet Suite.

Chris Waller’s last start Princess Stakes winner Ballet Suite was at $2.50 through when she was scratched out of The Roses line-up, the clear top fancy also second favourite for the Group 1 Queensland Oaks back at the track seven days later behind stablemate Winx.

Connections have opted to go straight into the Oaks with Ballet Suite but could still give her a run between races at Doomben on Saturday to keep her fit and firing for the big test.

With Ballet Suite out of Saturday’s showdown the new favourite in The Roses betting taking over the $2.50-to-win price tag is Lisa Latta’s Kiwi visitor Platinum Witness who ran second in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) back in mid-March at home.

She’s followed in The Roses markets by the market mover Bohemian Lily ($7 into $3.50) prepared by Gai Waterhouse and coming off a second to Ballet Suite in the Listed Princess Stakes at the same track and distance from the start of the month, and the last of the single figure hopes Exquisite Jewel ($7) who also hails from New Zealand and ran fourth in the Oaks before a 2000m win in late March and a last start Group 2 second behind Werther in the wet.

So should you follow the order of the odds or go for a value bet in The Roses this weekend?

#4 Bohemian Lily ($3.50)

She’s drawn wide in 11 (into 10) but still think Waterhouse’s daughter of O’Reilly deserves respect. She’ll likely roll forward from the gate and try to go all the way, which her class suggests she can do. Won the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) two back before the Princess Stakes second over this track and distance where only a quarter-length separated her and Ballet Suite. Without that same rival, this is hers for the taking.

#1 Platinum Witness ($2.50)

The Kiwi form looks good to hold up down under this winter and in gate seven with top local hoop Damian Oliver showing her around, this in-form California Dane filly presents a big danger. Was runner-up in the Oaks then dropped back to 1400m for a brave second on a Heavy (10) to keep her ticking over on May 10. Ready to run down under over a more suitable distance and has been good enough back home to suggest a competitive Brisbane raid.

#6 Exquisite Jewel ($7)

Sticking with the New Zealand form to hold with the Oaks fourth placegetter for third in The Roses. Gun barrier four draw for this weekend, a recent Group 3 2000m win back home over this distance and her second in Group 2 company last time out was behind Werther who franked the form down under running second in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) earlier in the month.
