Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A bumper nine-race program is set to run at Doomben Racecourse on the weekend for the latest Group 1 meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and betting tips for one of the day’s support acts, the 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup, are detailed below.
Set to run as Doomben Race 4 at 1:17pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Programmed Property Services Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) features a final field of 11 milers with the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by I’m Imposing ($3.70).
Drawn a treat in barrier two with Tye Angland to ride on the equal 59kg top weight, Chris Waller’s veteran nine-year-old is after his first win since the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) in Sydney last Boxing Day.
This time in he’s run two good thirds in Queensland when beaten 1.7 lengths by Leebaz in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast and then 3.1 lengths by Pornichet in the group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9.
He’s down in class and distance then for Saturday’s showdown making him the bookies’ tip despite the big weight.
The other Lord Mayor’s Cup favourites are then Waller’s six-year-old Redoute’s Choice gelding Strawberry Boy ($5.50) who will be flying over the 1600m and the local Robert Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten ($5.50) coming off a Doomben Cup fifth.
So do the bookies have the Lord Mayor’s Cup finishing order right for Brisbane tomorrow afternoon or is there value further down the Ladbrokes markets from the likes of market mover Estonian Princess ($11 into $7.50) or the Tony Gollan-trained Gundy Spirit ($11).
#2 I’m Imposing ($3.70)
Waller’s galloper is a rising 10-year-old with 59kg but there’s so much to like about the lead-up form it is hard to go past him for the win. Two impressive third place efforts in very good company including the Doomben Cup last time out won by star French import Pornichet. He carried 59kg that day and drops in class for this. Is also back to a mile off the 2000m run and he’s got a good 1600m record (6-2-1-0). Will be better in easier company with a look at the track now under his belt, Waller has a good winter strike rate in Brisbane and barrier two with Tye Angland staying on are another two ticks for the favourite.
#10 Estonian Princess ($7.50)
Money is coming for Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel mare and we’re also willing to forgive her last start when 10th to Charlie Boy in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) on May 9 here at Doomben. She was beaten five lengths that day but there were excuses and think she’ll be the big improver going up to a mile. Last time over the distance was in Sydney’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes in December when fourth to Rudy, a race I’m Imposing ran second in. Her first-up run this time in was also good when second behind I’ve Got The Looks on the Gold Coast and think she’ll be running more like that this weekend.
#4 Hopfgarten ($5.50)
Local hope from the Heathtcote stables who is also back in class after a Doomben Cup fifth. Top local hoop Damian Browne rides from a nice barrier five draw after doing it tough from 13 of 15 in the Group 1 last start. Lead-up form from this progressive Mossman four-year-old before that was very good including a win over 1350m at Doomben, a second over this track and distance in black type company behind Sir Moments and a Toowoomba Cup third. That all adds up for a big effort here.
Now is the perfect time to head over to Ladbrokes.com.au and open an account ahead of the weekend as they are matching the deposits of new customers dollar for dollar up to $500 for a limited time only with the code BETBONUS!
