Talented mare Srikandi all but ended her chances of a maiden Group 1 when standing in the gates in the BTC Cup (1200m) a fortnight ago, however trainer Ciaron Maher is confident she is in the right form for redemption in Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).
Srikandi was the star performer of the 2014 Brisbane Winter Carnival; taking out each of the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m), Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) on her way to third in the featured Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m).
Having set the daughter of Dubawi for another tilt at the Stradbroke this season, Maher was delighted with the work produced by the talented mare on the Doomben course on Tuesday morning and is confident she is capable of 2015 Doomben 10,000 success on Saturday.
“She’s come through ok and she’s just had an easy week,” Maher told Racing Ahead.
“She had a gallop yesterday morning (Tuesday) and has come through that well and is nice and bright today.
“She had a good gallop; she worked over 1000m and came up a strong 600m. Times were good.
“I’ve always aimed to her to peak in the Stradbroke but her fitness should be pretty good for Saturday.”
Srikandi has undoubtedly produced her most impressive performances to date on surfaces that have been affected by rain, and Maher is confident Saturday’s conditions will play into her strengths.
“She really appreciates a big of give in the track and there was a good bit of give in it when they galloped and there was a heavy dew this morning so I think it’s going to be a nice day,” he added.
“Very happy with her, she’s done well up here … Hopefully she can get away cleanly and get back to her good form.”
Having finished outside the first three only once in ten career starts so far, Srikandi spent close to a year in the paddock following her 2014 Stradbroke Handicap appearance, with Maher confident the Brisbane Winter Carnival figuring as her best chance of maiden Group 1 success.
Having returned this time for a comfortable win in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast a fortnight prior to the BTC Cup, Srikandi is currently available at a generous quote of $5.50 in 2015 Doomben Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, having drifted from opening odds of $5.
