Boban Cannot be Written Off in Doomben 10,000

Boban was unable to find peak condition over a brief autumn campaign however trainer Chris Waller has warned he should not be written off ahead of Saturday’s featured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane.

A three-time Group 1 winner, Boban undoubtedly found career-best form over the 2013 Spring Carnival, in which he posted a perfect five wins from as many starts highlighted by both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

Pleased with the work produced by the Bernardini gelding in the lead-up to his return, Waller is confident the 1350m running distance of the 2015 Doomben 10,000 will play into his strengths first-up.

“You can never underestimate Boban,” Waller told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“I would be one of them to say that (he hasn’t been in top condition for 12 months) but you can’t take away that Group 1 level and some of his runs have been pretty good in the past 12 months.

“Not all of them, but in particular his early races while fresh have been pretty good so we are handing on to that and it’s the type of race that will suit him and you would expect there to be a bit of pace on.

“He is pretty well and I don’t think the 1200m is any good form him and being 1350m fresh this weekend, I’m confident he is a chance.”

Posting a career total of nine wins and two minors through 30 competitive starts, Boban took a few races to find form over the 2014 Autumn Carnival but again proved a force over a mile when taking out a third Group 1 victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Waller is set to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2015 Doomben 10,000 after confirming talented import Flamingo Star will make his Australian debut in the feature race.

“We are planning towards the spring with him and he hasn’t shown us much at all until Money when he had his final gallop at Rosehill and his work was good,” Waller said of the five-year-old.

Allocated the central barrier 8, Boban will be partnered by regular hoop Glyn Schofield and should have no issue in carrying 59kgs.
