Big Money Capable of Doomben 10,000 Success

Queensland specialist Big Money ran on for a credible sixth in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) a fortnight ago and trainer Rod Northam is confident the five-year-old is in the right form to break through for a maiden win at the highest level in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Posting nine wins and a further four minors over 17 career starts so far, Big Money was a standout performer for Northam over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Carnival; running second in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) before taking out each of the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) and Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) in Grafton.

Having returned north in summer to take out each of the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) and Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m), Northam told AAP he has had Big Money’s 2015 winter campaign mapped out for more than 12 months and is thrilled with his condition ahead of the 2015 Doomben 10,000.

“I had in my mind after he won the Healy Stakes last year that the Doomben 10,000 and the Stradbroke would be the races we would target this winter,” Northam said.

“That was my plan during the summer, to take him up there for a couple of runs and run him over the 1350 at Doomben just to give him a look at the track and the distance so we can go there on Saturday and know that’s not going to pose any problems for us.

“He’s had a few little feet issues all preparation but he worked really nicely this morning and his feet haven’t been a problem since his last start.”

Northam went close to saddling a Group 1 winner in autumn when talented two-year-old Odyssey Moon ran a close second to Pride Of Dubai in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships, but is undoubtedly offered his best chance of a maiden win at the highest level via Big Money.

The 2015 Doomben 10,000 final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today.
