A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Champion hoop Hugh Bowman has secured the prized mount in Saturday week’s 2015 Queensland Oaks with Sydney’s best Chris Waller booking him to partner the early favourite Winx.
Street Cry filly Winx is the best fancied of the nominated three-year-old female staying types for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), running at Doomben Racecourse on May 30.
Pre-field Queensland Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Waller’s flyer Winx as the short-priced $2.30 favourite followed by her stablemate Ballet Suite ($6.50) who runs in the $175,000 Group 2 The Roses (2000m) this weekend.
The Roses had produced nine of the past 10 Queensland Oaks winners, but the bookies are tipping the form around Winx who secured top spot in betting with her barnstorming win in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) last Saturday.
That was her first start since a second to Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) in Sydney on April 11, and the Queensland Oaks over a distance between those two runs is set to suit.
Winx has had five different jockeys aboard over her past seven runs with Larry Cassidy the latest when taking over for Joao Moreira in the Sunshine Coast Guineas last weekend.
Bowman meanwhile was last aboard the progressive filly for her brave second behind First Seal in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick back in October last year.
He will reunite with her on May 30 then in the Queensland Oaks shooting for his second win in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival classic following his win aboard the Kris Lees-trained Vitesse Dane (2005) a decade ago.
Bowman is very much looking forward to reuniting with Winx in the Group 1 having been impressed with her last-to-first win in the Guineas where she had two lengths to spare on Ulmann on the line.
Other fillies featuring high up the latest Queensland Derby betting markets include the Robert Smerdon-trained Ungrateful Ellen ($9) coming off a third in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) in Adelaide last weekend and Lisa Latta’s Kiwi raider Platinum Witness ($10).
Platinum Witness is another one down to run in Saturday’s The Roses at Doomben Racecourse leading into the Oaks, the daughter of California Dane yet to race down under.
