2015 The Straight Six Nominations Feature Lumosty

Stradbroke Handicap-bound filly Lumosty continues towards the Brisbane Group 1 in Melbourne this weekend as one of the top hopes nominated for Flemington’s The Straight Six 2015.

There are two black types on the Flemington line-up for Saturday including the $120,000 Listed The Straight Six (1200m) for the handicap sprinters.

The race attracted a bumper 26 nominees including Robert Smerdon’s young Fastnet Rock filly, the three-year-old last seen winning over 1100m first-up at the track on May 9 defeating Pago Rock by an impressive three lengths.

That was her first win since taking out the Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) at Moonee Valley last Cox Plate Day, and victory again in Saturday’s Straight Six will bode well as she targets the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 6.

“She was good first-up and she has ticked over quite well since,” Smerdon told AAP.

“The idea is to run on Saturday and then head to Brisbane where two weeks beyond that there’s the option of the Stradbroke.

“But I’m told she’s well down the order, so she’s unlikely to make the field in which case she would run in the Dane Ripper Stakes on the same day.

“It makes no difference to programming, and then two weeks beyond that she would go to the Tatt’s Tiara.”

The $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) is the last of the winter Group 1s in Queensland runs at the Gold Coast on June 20.

Lumosty will be ridden by Dwayne Dunn on Saturday who takes over for her last start jockey Chris Parnham, Smerdon hoping her previous Group 2 form can stack up looking ahead to the Group 1s.

“As a Group Two winner what she needs now is some semblance of Group One form,” he said.

The only other three-year-old nominated for The Straight Six this weekend is then the in-form Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Face Forward, the Charge Forward filly shooting for her third straight win at Flemington.

Sitting top of The Straight Six nominations, ballot and weights with 60kg is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Reparations.

A six-year-old son of Exceed And Excel the gelding won the Listed Barton Stakes (1400m) at Sandown back in January before a fourth first-up behind Lumosty under handicap conditions carrying 59.5kg to the winner’s 54kg last time out.

Runner-up to Lumosty in the form race leading into Saturday’s Straight Six, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained seven-year-old Pago Rock is also in the mix as is the third-placed Hard Romp who won over 1000m first-up at the track before that.

Also coming out of that race are the likes of fifth-placed Le Bonsir and the Danny O’Brien-trained Decircles (9th).
