2015 Belmont Sprint Next for Luckygray

After a close win in last weekend’s Roma Cup the Trevor Andrews-trained Perth superstar Luckygray is set to back-up back at Belmont in the end-of-month Belmont Sprint 2015.

Three years ago the popular grey was prepared by Gino Poletti and in flying form at Belmont Park during the 2012 Perth Autumn Racing Carnival winning the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) before making it a hat-trick with subsequent victories in the Belmont Sprint and Hyperion Stakes.

A triple Group 1 winner with elite level form in Melbourne as well, Luckygray missed the 2013 Roma Cup but raced in the event last year when fourth behind injury saw him spend a year on the sidelines.

The now seven-year-old son of Bradbury’s Luck returned from that lengthy let-up just last Saturday with another Roma Cup run, this time beating home the Vaughn Sigley-trained Statue Of Liberty four-year-old Dawn Approach by a neck.

Andrews is now keen to capitalise on the veteran’s good form and set him for the same two Belmont races he won back in 2012 starting with the $150,000 Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) on May 30.

“He only just fell in, but he hasn’t raced for a long time and the second horse was race fit,” Andrews told The West.

“He’s going to improve out of sight fitness-wise.”

From there he will race again on June 13 with two weeks between the Belmont Sprint and the $125,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m), hopefully improving with each run as his fitness progresses.

“He’ll go on to the next two then go out for a break and come back for a crack at a third Railway,” Andrews said.

“We’ll assess his future after the summer carnival, depending on how he’s going.”

The $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) takes place at Ascot in late November each year and Luckygray boasts wins in the mile classic from 2013 and 2011 as well as having run second in the 2012 edition behind Mr Moet.
