Sadler’s Lake Heads 2015 Grand Prix Stakes Nominations

Sydney’s Chris Waller currently has the top two Queensland Derby hopes heading towards next month’s feature at Doomben and one of those, Sadler’s Lake, is the headline nominee for this weekend’s Grand Prix Stakes 2015.

One of the major support acts on the nine-race Doomben 10,000 Day card for Saturday, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes (2000m) attracted 21 nominations.

The likely favourite of those if accepted is Waller’s High Chaparral gelding Sadler’s Lake who currently occupies the second line of early betting at to win the traditional next-up assignment for Grand Prix graduates, the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) held this year at Doomben Racecourse on June 6.

Futures Queensland Derby odds are currently led by Waller’s Sunshine Coast Guineas winning filly Winx ($5.50) followed closely by Sadler’s Lake ($6.50) who will be out to become the third horse in four years to complete the Grand Prix – Queensland Derby double.

The last to do so was another Waller-trained galloper, Hawkspur (2013), and before that the Peter Moody-trained Brambles (2012).

Sadler’s Lake was last seen winning the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 9, an effort he’ll be out to repeat at the same track and distance on Saturday on way to his Group 1 test in the Derby.

Waller has also nominated for fellow High Chaparral gelding Quick Strike and Redoute’s Choice colt Redoutable Heart for the Grand Prix Stakes this year.

Quick Strike is current third favourite at $8.50 to win the Derby despite the galloper not having won a race since October last year over the mile at Warwick Farm.

He is already a Group 1 performed three-year-old however having run a brave fifth when beaten only two lengths by smart Kiwi Mongolian Khan in the Australian Derby over the mile and a half in Sydney in early April.

The next best fancied youngster in the latest Queensland Derby betting markets nominated for the Grand Prix is Master Of Arts ($9), the Darren Weir-trained Mastercraftsman colt boasting a nice record of two wins, a second and a third from four starts.

As yet unraced in black type company, the galloper was last seen winning over 2000m at Caulfield on May 2, form he’ll be out to bring to Brisbane on Saturday.

Also well liked in the early Derby markets is Sunshine Coast hopeful Worthy Cause ($10), the Choisir colt nominated for a short back-up into the Grand Prix Stakes.

Winner of the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast two back, Worthy Cause raced last weekend at home when third to Winx in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

Other in-form Grand Prix Stakes hopes who are Derby-bound this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival include the Gerald Ryan-trained Bachman and Michael Nolan’s Jumbo Prince.

All American colt Bachman ran third to Najoom in Rosehill’s Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) last time out while the consistent Toowoomba-trained Jumbo Prince won the Toowoomba Guineas two back before his brave third to Sadler’s Lake in the Rough Habit earlier this month.

Other notable Grand Prix nominees include Ben Ahrens’ Rough Habit fourth placed colt Chillin With Dylan and the Peter Moody-trained Upham who ran second in both the Gunsynd and the Rough Habit Plate.
