Real Good Holds to Win 2015 Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic

After looking a sure thing 50m from the line Real Good only just held on by a nose to win the Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic 2015 at the Sunshine Coast on Caloundra Cup Day.

The local Trevor Miller-trained Real Saga gelding was first-up not having raced since January and was ridden by Michael Cahill for his maiden victory in the $100,000 Listed Wimmers Premium Soft Drinks Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic (1200m).

In his fourth start he finally broke through for a win, but it almost wasn’t the case with Cahill taking off for the line a little early and opening the horse up to be a sitting duck for the fast-finishing Handfast.

However Real Good ($11) just held on by a narrow margin to defeat the John O’Shea-trained Street Cry colt Handfast ($5.50) while third in the Bruce McLachlan went to Mr Optimistic ($9) who came from a mile back on the turn to finish in the money.

Best out of the barriers and going up to lead them round in the two-year-olds’ set weights clash was the Less Ross-trained Frequendly and jockey Brad Stewart on the rails.

They sat in front of Real Good while Tony Noonan’s Mornington-based Domesday colt Mr Optimistic, coming off a win over the distance at the Gold Coast from April 29, dropped right back to second last with 750m to travel.

Frequendly was getting a good run on the inside of Jam Toast then as Bruce Hill’s Tailevent went up to lead.

On the turn into the straight eventual fourth-placed Frequendly fought back again to tackle the leader on the outside, dashing up to take front spot 200m out.

Fifty metres from home however Real Good, who had gotten a lovely run fourth throughout, jumped into the picture going on to win in a tight photo finish Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic result.

Next-up options for the better performed juveniles in the Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic include a possible Queensland Oaks Day back-up at Doomben on May 30 in the $100,000 Listed The Phoenix (1350m) or potentially a run in the $600,000 Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 6.
