Prince Of Brooklyn Wins 2015 National Stakes On Debut

Mick Price’s previously unraced colt Prince Of Brooklyn kicked off The Goodwood Day card and his career with a win taking out the National Stakes 2015 in Adelaide on debut.

An intriguing little race for two-year-olds to start the meeting, the $115,000 Group 3 Seven News National Stakes (1200m) was the first at Morphettville and all the money was on the rails-drawn favourite Strykum.

Coming off a win in the Listed Queen of Adelaide stakes (1050m) at the track from May 2 the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained filly was one of the first out of the gates along with Richard Jolly’s fellow last start winner Evil Dreams.

Evil Dreams held the early lead before Strykum and jockey Ben Melham, winner of The Goodwood on this day for the past two years, moved up on the inside to take the running up front.

Behind them after settling were the likes of Beau Rivage and the John O’Shea-trained Badajoz who had no luck in his run getting caught up as they came round the bend.

Strykum held a narrow lead into the straight after they turned for home but getting through and sprinting up quickly to meet her was the Dale Smith-ridden Magnus two-year-old Prince Of Brooklyn.

Having had the one official trial when fourth over 800m back in Melbourne in mid-April, Prince Of Brooklyn ($11) got a lovely clear run late and showed a brilliant turn of foot to run home as the clear National Stakes winner.

The favourite filly got swamped late and finished out of the money with a photo for the minor placings seeing the brave Godolphin-raced Badajoz ($2.60) run a good second off a luckless run and the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Counter Pulse ($13) run third again on the back of a Queen Adelaide Stakes fifth.

Last year’s National Stakes winner was also previously unraced and from the Mick Price stables, Moonovermnhattan sent out after the victory before coming back in the spring back home in Melbourne.

Something similar is likely to be on the agenda for Prince Of Brooklyn this year as well with a possible Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) campaign in October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival calling.
