Falino Wins 2015 Bribie Handicap in an Upset

The upset results on Caloundra Cup Day continued right through until the last with Darren Bell’s veteran sprinter Falino getting up to win the Bribie Handicap 2015 at the Sunshine Coast.

A winner over the 1200m at Doomben back in late January before a fifth at the same track over 1350m in February and a disappointing last start seven when three lengths off Mr Faulous in Toowoomba’s Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m), Falino enjoyed his ninth win at career start number 37.

His third start at the track, the Fusaichi Pegasus seven-year-old jumped from barrier seven in the $100,000 Listed Yalumba Wines Bribie Handicap (1000m) with Brad Stewart in the saddle on 56kg.

Handling the extra two kilos than he had on his back for the Weetwood failure, Falino sat just off the speed throughout the run with the Tom Bourke-trained top weight Rocky King (59kg) going up to set the pace after jumping from barrier one.

Rocky King and his hoop Tegan Harrison led from the in-form Gold Coast galloper Craiglea Cruz as they went across in a line of four with last start Dalby winner Thinkhesaurus and the Joe Pride-trained Sydney visitor Diamond Oasis who was also fast out of the gates from barrier 15 with Damian Browne aboard.

On the straight with 400m to go Diamond Oasis came well away from the fence striding up as the Matt Kropp-trained Thinkhesaurus fought back.

The duo were fighting it out but others were making their runs also including outside hope in betting Falino ($21) who got up on the fence and held on to defeat a late finishing Seeking More ($15), drawn the second widest gate, from the Kelso Wood stables.

Finishing off the top three over the line in the Bribie Handicap was then the Peter Moody-trained stallion Office Bearer ($14) who did well to finish in the money first-up having last been seen running eighth to Decircles in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

Falino is not currently nominated for any of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival majors but could be competitive again over the coming weeks in some Doomben black types on the back of the Bribie Handicap win.
