He hadn’t won a race since August last year but the Peter Moody-trained Flamberge more than atoned for the drought at Morphettville Racecourse winning The Goodwood 2015 feature sprint in an upset this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Exceed And Excel five-year-old from Melbourne had been racing in solid form without winning until he was tested in Group 1 company at Rosehill on March 21 to finish a below par 12th to Sweet Idea in The Galaxy (1100m).
Moody decided to give him another go in elite level in the $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) and it proved a winning move with the back-in-form sprinter getting the job done as a $21 outsider in betting.
Drawn wide in barrier 16 of 17 with Vlad Duric in the saddle, Flamberge was one of the best out of the gates in a fast-firing start to his The Goodwood win.
Also quick out was the Robbie Laing-trained TJ Smith Stakes runner-up Lord Of The Sky who dashed well to lead from Doug Harrison’s Strategic colt Tudor in the outside alley who raced the Saturday before when second to Nicoscene in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) at the same track and distance.
The Goodwood favourite Black Heart Bart meanwhile was well back with only a few behind the in-form Perth raider early.
In third after settling into a nice spot on the rails was Moody’s other runner, last start Group 3 DC McKay Stakes winner Thermal Current just ahead of the fourth-settled Flamberge.
On the bend Lord Of The Sky led them into the straight from Tudor and Thermal Current back on the inside of the eventual winning stablemate Flamberge.
Tudor went up to Lord Of The Sky and the two battled it out briefly before Flamberge ($21) went up and took it out in a boilover for Moody.
Lord Of The Sky ($10) held for second before the Robert Smerdon-trained Excellent Art stallion Under The Louvre ($7), who had to thread his way through the field to get into the finish, ran a nice third to finish off The Goodwood trifecta.
Flamberge handed Moody with his second The Goodwood win following the success of the mighty mare Black Caviar during her trip to South Australia back in 2012 on the back of her Robert Sangster Stakes victory at the track as well.
Last year’s The Goodwood winner Smokin’ Joey, who scored an upset at even longer odds of 40-1 and who was never in the finish today trying to defend his title, travelled to Brisbane on the back of his success to run eighth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.
Flamberge is among the nominations for the $2 million Stradbroke this year, the race held over an amended distance of 1350m at Doomben on June 6.
