2015 Dark Jewel Classic Results: Divertire Dives Late

A short freshen-up worked a treat with the Joe Pride-trained Divertire who showed her best form fresh at Scone Racecourse on day two of the Scone Cup Carnival to win the feature race of the day, the Dark Jewel Classic 2015.

Settled right back off the pace in this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Darley Dark Jewel Classic (1400m), the Enconsul mare was ridden a treat by jockey Danny Beasley who enjoyed the feature race win only a month back riding in Sydney.

She was accepted for the handicap feature, where she carried the 54kg minimum, without a jockey and Pride put Beasley on as he was the best of the available hoops.

“He rode her a treat, it was a really good ride,” Pride said of the jockey’s performance post-win.

“He had her comfortable all the way.”

It proved a winning booking with the hoop getting the job done in fine style, Divertire coming from the back of the field down the outside to draw away and score the win over the Chris Waller-trained Calming Influence, who ran third in the Darley Crown at Rosehill last weekend, with David Vandyke’s Bound For Earth running third.

Calming Influence won the break away from the barriers in the Dark Jewel Classic to lead early from the Anthony Cummings-trained Snippetson four-year-old Vergara and Waller’s other runner Mamwaazel.

Coming up to the turn Calming Influence turned the corner two in front of her closest rival but was quickly put under enormous pressure as the rest of the field made their runs including the favourite Rose Of Choice down the outside.

Divertire though picked them all up quickly, rushing past the field to win for Pride who pulled off a nice training effort to keep her fresh and allow her to have that big finish under her.

Divertire hadn’t raced since a third on a Heavy (8) track over the Warwick Farm mile behind Silverball on March 25, but ran an excellent trial on Monday when third to Atmospherical over 808m at home to bring her on for the Dark Jewel Classic.

“Her trial was excellent on Monday,” Pride said.

“She really hit the line well.”

Fitness proved a non-issue and so did not having a wet track, which Pride originally thought she might need to win, as she saluted on way to a possible trip up to Queensland to chase more riches during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

“She’s a good, honest mare,” he said.

“She was excellent.

“She’s very much done her job but she’s only lightly raced and gets up to a mile to 2000m.”
