Due to run as Race 6 at 3:22pm (AEST) this year’s $175,000 Listed Linked Group Plumbing Caloundra (2400m) features a final field of 12 with the odds at a wide open affair.

Six of the runners are at single figures for the win including the 59kg top weight Index Linked leading betting at $3.60.

Drawn well in barrier four with Damian Browne riding, Chris Waller’s seven-year-old import is after his first win in four starts but put the writing on the wall last start when a half-length away second in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast on April 25.

The next best in Caloundra Cup betting are then the market mover Sir John Hawkwood ($5.50) who is a dour staying type, the John Thompson-trained Sydney Chairman’s Handicap winner over 2600m Tremec ($6) and Rob Heathcote’s in-form Dehere six-year-old Volkhere ($6).

So will this year’s Caloundra Cup winner come from one of the top fancies in betting or is there more value further down the markets with an upset pending from the likes of Escado ($8) to be ridden by Luke Nolen or Chris Munce’s in-form Queensland stayer Perplexity ($9)?

#5 Volkhere ($6)

One of Brisbane’s best horsemen Heathcote is supremely confident in the chances of his in-form six-year-old who comes off a string of close calls including a Chairman’s Handicap third at the Gold Coast last month and his second to subsequent Doomben Cup winner Pornichet in the Toowoomba Cup (2150m) on May 2. Gets a fortnight between runs, Tegan Harrison stays on, the step up in distance looks the right time with his previous winning form extending out to 2200m and looks well weighted on 54.5kg to continue to frank the form of the Toowoomba Cup.

#6 Perplexity ($9)

Tipping the local advantage to reign supreme in the Caloundra Cup with Munce’s in-form Lonhro gelding having won two of his past four starts including over 2200m at Doomben two back in a race Volkhere ran third in. Last start was in the Gold Coast’s Chairman’s back on Anzac Day where he finished fourth, where he came hard. Has run up to 2500m and won over 2200m three times so the mile and a half should suit to a tee here.

#1 Index Linked ($3.60)

Can’t leave the favourite out completely with plenty of boxes ticked, the weight aside. Not sure about the 2400m distance, he’s only been over it once when a disappointing 10th to Banca Mo in the Mornington Cup on March 28. If he’ll get a good run though from barrier four and if he handles the metres and the weight he’ll be finishing fast.
