This weekend the major race taking place in Australia is The Goodwood 2015 in Adelaide, betting tips for the classic Morphettville sprint found below.
Set to run as Race 7 at 3:48pm (AEST), this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) features a final field of 17 and Ladbrokes.com.au are offering a bonus bet if your first fixed odds win bet runs second or third.
The Goodwood betting market mover and current favourite to win is the Vaughn Sigley-trained Blackfriars four-year-old Black Heart Bart who has firmed in from $5.50 to $4.40 to win his fifth consecutive race.
His latest turf triumph was at Bunbury over 1400m on March 8, Saturday the galloper’s first run outside of WA, the Perth form stacking up in the east this autumn with ace filly Delicacy completing the WA and SA Oaks – Derby doubles.
Occupying the second line of The Goodwood odds at $4.60, out from an opening price of $4, is then the Phillip Stokes-trained Hucklebuck who was last seen winning the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington back in November.
The other single figure hopes are then Darren Weir’s Group 1 winning Victorian Lucky Hussler ($6) and the consistent Under The Louvre ($9) to be ridden by Mark Zahra from barrier five.
So should you stick with the bookies’ selections or tip an upset The Goodwood result from the likes of Lindsay Park’s Robert Sangster Stakes runner-up Gregers ($15) or even Peter Moody’s last start Group 3 DC McKay Stakes winner at the track Thermal Current ($19)?
#1 Hucklebuck ($4.60)
Stokes’s returning Elvstoem four-year-old opened favourite but has eased out, which suits us. He won three straight last time in including one over this track and distance, his second from as many 1200m Morphettville runs. In total he has had three wins and a third from four starts over the distance, which looks ideal for his first-up run. Speaking of first-up he is also a flyer fresh with three wins from four resuming runs, and don’t stress about the fitness factor, he has won his two recent Adelaide trials over 1000m including one by nearly four lengths on May 8.
#12 Gregers ($15)
Good value for this David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of Commands who has run top three in all her autumn runs leading into this. She’s had three previous runs at the track including last time out a fortnight ago when a brave second only just nosed out of the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) victory by former Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles Of Life. The mares have an ace recent The Goodwood record winning four straight before Smokin’ Joey’s upset 12 months ago, and if it is the ladies that return to the winner’s stall in 2015, Gregers looks great value from barrier six with Craig Williams in the saddle.
#5 Thermal Current ($19)
Moody bought this Exceed and Excel gelding over to Adelaide last time out and the four-year-old thrived straight away winning the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1200m) in a fine effort from a wide barrier 10 of 11 draw. He is up in class for this weekend but returns to the same track and distance, and has Ben Melham in the saddle who shoots for his third The Goodwood winning ride in as many years following his victories aboard Platelet (2013) and Smokin’ Joey (2014). Will also appreciate a better barrier on the weekend jumping from four.
