Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The sole Group status race on the Queensland line-up this weekend is the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2015 running on Caloundra Cup Day on Saturday, betting tips for the three-year-olds classic found below.
Due to run as Race 5 at 2:42pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) field is full with 18 starters and an emergency runner, the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Chris Waller’s Queensland Oaks-bound filly Winx ($4).
She has the wide barrier 15 draw but Larry Cassidy riding her for her first start since running second in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in Sydney last month.
Also at single figures is the John Zielke-trained market mover Worthy Cause ($7 into $5.50), the drifting Merion ($7) who ran third in the Frank Packer Plate last time out, the widely-drawn Swift Lady ($8) coming off a Randwick win and the John O’Shea-trained Abduction ($9).
So will the widely-drawn favourite who drops right back in distance salute for the punters or is there better value in the Sunshine Coast Guineas betting markets from the likes of the lightly-raced Gai Waterhouse-trained Skylimit ($10)?
#11 Winx ($4)
She might be out wide and dropping back from 2400m to the 1600m on way to the Queensland Oaks at the end of the month but the Sydney form should stack up here. Was second in the ATC Oaks last time out and has plenty of class. Needs to overcome the gate but if she does that she can salute after a freshen-up, and Waller’s Queensland record is good.
#6 Skylimit ($10)
A number of livewire chances but tipping this Waterhouse-trained Flying Spur colt to be the big improver in just his fourth career start. Has run top three in all of his starts so far but is yet to step up in black type company. Deserves a shot at that starting here after his close second in the Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) on May 2. The two weeks between runs looks ideal, he’s been over the distance now and should be settled in the Sunshine State ready to run a big race.
#2 Worthy Cause ($5.50)
Money is coming for this in-form local Choisir colt who has won his past two starts and who has winning form up to 1800m. Two back won over 1350m at Doomben on April 18 and then last time out on Anzac Day won the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast in a big two length effort over Upham. That form looks hard to bet against so a must-include with all exotics.
