A diminutive field of just nine hopefuls is set to line-up in the lucrative $150,000 Group 3 Del Basso Smallgoods Roma Cup (1200m), which is set to run as Belmont Race 7 at 4:17pm (WA time).

Leading the Roma Cup field and betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is triple Group 1 winner Luckygray at $2.90, Trevor Andrews’ Bradbury’s Luck seven-year-old returning to racing off a 12 month break.

Last time out the veteran was seen running fourth in the 2014 Roma Cup when only a quarter-length off Magnifisio in a blanket finish, and on Saturday he shoots for his fifth win from six starts at Belmont.

Luckygray’s latest win was the 2013 Railway Stakes so it has been a long time between drinks for the popular local who has a nice first-up record (7-4-0-0) and comes off a strong trial win over Balmont Girl here on May 11.

Four other horses are also at single figures to win the Roma Cup this weekend including the rails-drawn Fuchsia Bandana ($4) last seen running fifth to Moriarty in December’s Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) and the Grant Williams-trained six-year-old Shining Knight ($4.20) last seen running second to Dawn Approach in the Listed Northam Toyota Stakes (1100m) on May 3.

So will one of the top fancies get the job done in Saturday’s Roma Cup or is the value further down the markets in a horse like Chris Gangemi’s Redoute’s Choice five-year-old Rock Magic ($7.50) or last start Northam winner Dawn Approach ($9)?

#1 Luckygray ($2.90)

Class factor should prevail here and see the veteran favourite get the job done in his first race since last year’s Roma Cup. A triple Group 1 winner, drawn in barrier two, proven weight-for-age, performs well fresh, five-from-nine over the distance, four-from-five at the track, a dual winner at the track and distance – just ticks so many boxes. Hasn’t raced in a year or won since November 2013 but put the writing on the wall with a trial win here over Balmont Girl on May 11. Stick with.

#3 Shining Knight ($4.20)

Grant Williams’ six-year-old was brave in defeat at Northam last time out and can improve getting back up to the 1200m this weekend. He’s got a good record at Belmont (3-2-0-1) and is racing really consistently. Latest win was in December last year at Ascot over 1000m, but was finishing so strongly last start in similar company think he’ll be ready to peak second-up here.

#6 Dawn Approach ($9)

Beat Shining Knight home last time out and so is after back-to-back black type wins. The Vaughn Sigley-trained Statue Of Liberty four-year-old sees Belmont for the first time here but has a good record over the distance (9-3-1-1) and has raced competitively in good company before. Did lots of work for his recent victory sitting outside the leader throughout so with the right run here can be right in the finish.
