The feature race at Scone’s standalone Saturday meeting this weekend is the Dark Jewel Classic 2015, betting tips for the fillies-and-mares’ feature found below.
Set to run as Scone Race 6 at 3:10pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Darley Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) features a final field of 14 with the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the firming Rose Of Choice.
Drawn well in barrier six with Jim Cassidy booked for the ride, Peter & Paul Snowden’s Choisir five-year-old opened at $4.40 but has shortened into $4 to post her first win since the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) at Ascot in December of 2013.
She’s only lightly raced since then however and hasn’t raced in 2015, her latest start being a fifth at Canterbury over 1550m back in December.
She has a good first-up record though (5-1-2-2) and after a nice winning barrier trial over 1050m at Randwick at the start of the month the bookies are tipping a successful return from her this weekend.
Also at single figures to win the Dark Jewel this autumn are the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Calming Influence ($5.50), Diademe ($7) to be ridden by last weekend’s Doomben Cup – BTC Cup double winning jockey Blake Shinn and Fine Bubbles ($7.50) coming off a third in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick back on April 11.
With a number of genuine hopes close in the markets do you back or sack the top fancy at Scone playing it safe or going for the value?
#2 Fine Bubbles ($7.50)
Newcastle’s Kris Lees prepares this progressive Casino Prince five-year-old who is a veteran of 30 starts for just the five wins but a host of other minor placings. She was stepped up in class last time out in the Group 2 Sapphire during Sydney’s The Championships and ran a good race form a wide barrier 11 of 12 draw to cross two lengths off the winner. She’s back up to the 1400m here, which should suit, a distance she has a solid record over (11-2-3-1) at a track she’s undefeated at (2-2-0-0).
#4 Calming Influence ($5.50)
Waller’s Commands four-year-old has five wins from 15 starts to date, her latest being over this distance at Flemington back on New Year’s Day. She was unplaced in the Triscay Stakes after that but then looked solid in the rescheduled Darley Crown at Rosehill last Saturday running third to Solicit over 1300m. Extra 100m here will suit for her first run at Scone, only needs to handle the short back-up.
She may be drawn wide in barrier 13 of 14 but think Waller’s other runner in this is a definite top three chance if she can get across. Glyn Schofield has the ride again back aboard after Josh Parr rode her to sixth in the Darley Crown last weekend. She was beaten under two lengths and will appreciate the extra metres this weekend looking to return to the form that saw her win the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) over the Gosford mile back in January.
