Chris Waller’s Queensland Oaks-bound filly Winx has opened early favourite to win the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2015 over the mile up at Caloundra this weekend on way to the Brisbane Group 1 at the end of the month.
Waller has taken a non-traditional path to the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), run at Doomben on May 30, with his daughter of Street Cry Winx with the race run over 200m shorter than traditionally because of the change of venues this winter.
She was last seen running over the mile and a half when finishing second in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in Sydney on April 11 and will now return to the track for her Queensland debut in Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).
Set to run as the Sunshine Coast Race 5 at 2:42pm (AEST), this year’s Guineas features a capacity 18 starters plus an emergency with Winx sitting top of the odds at [ladbrkes].
Drawn wide in barrier 15 with Larry Cassidy to ride, not even the alley has stopped the filly from dominating the Sunshine Coast Guineas markets as she pays $4 to beat home the boys in the 1600m showdown.
There are four other single figure hopes to win one of the feature races on the card in Queensland on Saturday including the market mover Worthy Cause in from $7 to $5.50 after drawing barrier one.
Justin Stanley has the ride on the in-form John Zielke-trained local Sunshine Coast galloper, the Choisir colt having won his past two on the trot including the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast on April 25.
The next best in betting at $7 is then Merion in barrier 12 with top Queensland jockey Damian Browne booked for the ride, Michael Moroney’s O’Reilly gelding coming off two good thirds in Sydney.
The first on March 28 was over 2000m in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and then on April 18 at Randwick he was beaten just over a length and a half by Hi World in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate.
Rounding out the single figure hopes in the Guineas this year are then Abduction and Swift Lady both paying $9 but drawn at opposite ends of the field with barriers four and 17 respectively.
The John O’Shea-trained Street Cry filly Abduction hasn’t run top three since her second to Thunder Lady in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) last November at Flemington, but is tipped to improve on a last start seventh to Candelara in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) when dropped back to a mile.
Swift Lady meanwhile is prepared in Sydney by John Sargent, the daughter of O’Reilly having won a Benchmark 70 in the wet at Randwick over the 1600m back on Anzac Day.
Representing more value in the markets at double figures are then the likes of lightly raced Skylmit ($10) for Gai Waterhouse who comes off a second in the Toowoomba Guineas over 1625m a fortnight ago and the Peter Moody-trained Gunsynd Classic fourth placed Sebring colt Ulmann ($17).
